Regina Spektor “Begin To Hope” (Sire)
Anti-folk singer, Regina Spektor steps into more mainstream waters on Begin To Hope, her major label debut for Sire. It seems as though Spektor has one foot in her past and one foot out the door. That causes for an uneasy listen at times. However, there are some great songs here and all past comparisons to artists like Cat Power and Fiona Apple still ring true for the most part. Spektor’s next offering will certainly be an interesting listen. I have a feeling that it might even be a greater departure in sound than Begin To Hope. For now though, Begin To Hope only half fullfills the promise of Spektor’s earlier work.
