The Forms “The Forms” (Threespheres)

Moody indie rock band The Forms return with their long-awaited second album. Steve Albini is back behind the boards for the band and this album follows their debut, 2003’s Icarus. Recorded over 50 consecutive days, this self-titled affair is a testament to a band’s determination and perseverance for perfection. Where Icarus only clocked in at 18 minutes and felt more like a collection of ideas, this self-titled affair is fully realized. As good as Icarus was, the album suffered from an incomplete feeling. Here though, the band concentrates more on writing structurally sound songs. It works as this half an hour listen is truly invigorating. The cohesion that the band commits to does nothing to distract from their art. In reality, it pushes the band in a more powerful and captivating direction. Self-admitted perfectionists, it is that attention to detail that sets The Forms apart from their peers. Some songs drone, others move at a steady pace, but the perfect mood is created as each song fit together remarkably. Four years in the making, the band has put together quite a statement here. Give The Forms ample time and you will be rewarded. Now, let’s just hope the next record makes it to us before 2011.

I didn’t really love it, but I have to review it for a magazine so I’ll give it a few more listens. Eh.

One of the most solid albums I’ve heard in a while.

Catchy as hell and near flawless in execution, this plays more as a sum than individual parts — even more impressive considering each of those parts could have easily held together a lesser album.

    Bones is the shit.
