The Twilight Sad “Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters” (Fat Cat)
It was an absolute shame to see Aereogramme hang it up earlier this year after releasing their most fully realized effort. It is funny how things seem to work though. Just as their fellow Scottish brethren were hanging it up, The Twilight Sad were stepping into the light to feel that void. The Twilight Sad’s music is impressively thick with a diverse array of instrumentation scattered through its gripping songs. It is refreshing to hear a rock band like The Twilight Sad embracing their loudness. Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters has moments of glorious guitar feedback that wash over the listener. James Graham’s thick Scottish accent really adds another layer to the band’s music. His lyrics are vivid and compliment the emotional weight of these songs as well. Whether it is Graham’s affecting vocals or the band’s epic instrumental onslaught, The Twilight Sad are able to convey their heavy emotions upon the listener in an impressive fashion. Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters is The Twilight Sad’s anthemic debut and it is a remarkably moving and mature album for such a young band.
