Mica Shot A Hole In The Sky “Ep1″ (Self-Released)
“Mica Shot A Hole In The Sky is the name of a book about a kid who destroys everything, only to discover the inherent emptiness of existence.” The four songs that make up Ep1 are meant to accompany a short story about a kid’s journey to the end of the world. This journey ables him to see the world as it truly is.
Ep1 is an intriguing ambient/instrumental project with four poignant pieces. November 20th, 1820 is a droning, lonely movement with the sound of the ocean’s waves breaking in the background. Proxima Centauri is the most moving piece for me personally. The spoken word recording mixed in touches a primal nerve. The speaker is discussing infinity and the act of living forever. He goes on to recall lying in bed as a child and becoming breathless at the thought. I can remember that same feeling growing up. The idea of eternal life (or death) is an overwhelming thought. The Approaching Eclipse Cast Our Shadows As Tall As Skyscrapers is perhaps the most traditional song here as it touches on the instrumental guitar feedback of numerous post-rock bands. Bodhi Tree/Afterglow follows along the same path and ends the demo beautifully. There is another spoken word piece eloquently woven into this piece’s fabric.
While there is a back story and a purpose displayed, these songs are quite capable of standing on their own just as well. Ep1 is an enthralling and thought-provoking listen. Mica Shot A Hole In The Sky shows the depth at which instrumental music can conjure up our emotions.
