SAL’s Best Albums of 1998

in Year End Lists

James at Get Over Yourself had a great idea of making a list of our top records of ten years ago…way back in 1998. Eric at Can You See The Sunset and I of course fell right in line. Probably cause we’re a bunch of music dorks who will end up liking a lot of the same records anyway. Yay for grown men entertaining themselves with nonsense and irrelevant list making! Thanks Twitter! On that note, here are SAL’s favorite albums of 1998.

Alkaline Trio “Goddamnit” (Asian Man)

The Appleseed Cast “The End Of The Ring Wars” (Deep Elm)

Archers Of Loaf “White Trash Heroes” (Alias)

At The Drive-In “In/Casino/Out” (Fearless)

Avail “Over The James” (Lookout)

Braid “Frame And Canvas” (Polyvinyl)

The Broadways “Broken Star” (Asian Man)

Cursive “The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song” (Saddle Creek)

Dillinger Four “Midwestern Songs Of The Americas” (Hopeless)

Elliott “US Songs” (Revelation)

Fugazi “End Hits” (Dischord)

Hellbender “Con Limon” (Reservoir)

Jets To Brazil “Orange Rhyming Dictionary” (Jade Tree)

Kid Dynamite “Self-Titled” (Jade Tree)

Knapsack “This Conversation Is Ending Starting Right Now” (Alias)

Less Than Jake “Hello Rockview” (Capital)

Mineral “EndSerenading.” (Crank)

Mock Orange “Nines & Sixes” (Lobster)

Neutral Milk Hotel “In The Aeroplane Over The Sea” (Merge)

Samiam “You Are Freaking Me Out” (Ignition)

Sunny Day Real Estate “How It Feels To Be Something On” (Sub Pop)

HOT DAMN! Look at that list! Shit just can’t be topped. What happened to music? I’m not one of those sad sorry sops who sit around thinking about the “oldies” or anything, but seriously, look what’s happened in just ten years. I think The Thorns of Life are the only thing getting me through these days of intense skepticism for what the future of music has to offer… that and everything on my Top Ten list of ‘08!

    Samiam fucking rule.

woah, what a great year for music!

  3. brian says:

good list. i just started listening to my old jets to brazil and promise ring albums this week.

  4. brian says:

ps – are you stoked to hell about appleseed cast’s sixth album out in february? i’m not really.

  5. Bradley says:

Great list. A lot of old favorites there.

For me, these albums would be added to / replace some of those you listed:

Don Caballero – What Burns Never Returns
June of ‘44 – Four Great Points
Duotang – Cons & The Pros
Four Hundred Years – Transmit Failure
    Sloan – Navy Blues
    Tortoise – TNT

and maybe Seam – The Pace is Glacial

I think the only album you listed I flat out didn’t like was Archers of Loaf. I could never get into them.

  6. Bradley says:

    Oooh…

Hal Al Shedad – Textures of Tomorrow.

That was a staple for me.

  7. Will says:

Brian – I am actually quite stoked on Appleseed Cast. I thought the last album was great.

Bradley – I considered 400 years, Seam and June of 44. 400 years was just on the outside.

Even a lot of Archers of Loaf fans might disagree with me about White Trash Heroes. I thought it was an awesome departure for the band. It’s a shame that was the last album they put out.

  8. andy m says:

i do disagree. that’s the only archers of loaf stuff that i find unlistenable.

  9. Will says:

andy, you are good at disagreeing…but that’s what i love about you!

  11. [...] year Jayme had a great idea of making a list of our favorite records of ten years ago…way back to 1998 to be exact. Eric at Can You See The Sunset and I of course followed right along. Well, we are back [...]
