Lights At Sea’s self-titled demo is a truly refreshing slice of instrumental rock. It is the straight-ahead/no bullshit approach from the band that I find so rewarding for such a young band. Where many bands might try to overstep their capabilities, Lights At Sea never pull off more than they can chew. The young band from Grand Rapids, Michigan refuses to succumb to any cheap tactics or emotional high/lows. Instead, you have six dynamic and muscular songs that show a wealth of potential for the band. I am reminded of Pelican the most here but where I find that band’s sound to be very disjointed and even plodding at times, Lights At Sea sound completely organic and moving. This is everything I wished Pelican could be. Lights At Sea are incredibly strong and mature for a band still very much in their infancy. Frankly, this is how instrumental rock should sound. Lights At Sea provide a perfect example of how bands should construct themselves. Start out with a solid backbone and expand from there. We shall see where Lights At Sea go from here. Until then, the band has provided us with a triumphant starting point.
