Sharks And Sailors hail from Houston, TX and play a pleasant mix of mathy indie rock post-hardcore. If bands like Shiner, Chavez or Hum float your boat then Builds Brand New is an album you should have on your radar. Characterized by meaty riffs and deceptive melodies, Sharks And Sailors debut has a tendency to float by in an enjoyable, yet nondescript haze. When studied closer though, the subtleties of the band really begin to take shape. Builds Brand New is the tale of contrasting dynamics and sounds. First you have the male voice which is often offset by airy female vocals. Then you have the band’s softer shoegazing melodies which are countered with an almost hypnotic and dark aggression. While it doesn’t always work to perfection, when Sharks And Sailors are hitting just right at both sides of the spectrum they are utterly captivating.
