Envy “Recitation”
Ah yes, Envy. While not necessarily a backlash I’ve read things about Envy lately implying the band are formulaic and really that’s hard to argue against. Yet it doesn’t change the fact that the formula is so captivating and the band carries it out so well that it continues to work time and time again. Recitation is no different really…twelve songs at over an hour with six songs over the six minute mark. It’s an admittedly exhausting listen yet still so powerful. Beautiful, emotional and all those things we’ve come to expect from the Japanese band, Recitation continues the Envy legacy.
Junip “Fields”
I’m a big fan of José González so when I heard the singer/songwriter had a band I was intrigued. Upon first listens I wasn’t really feeling it but I have found myself reaching for Junip a lot lately. Fields just came out and is the band’s debut full-length after several EP releases. It really is quite similar to what you might expect it to sound like…just take González’s songwriting and amp it up ever so slightly.

I love the wacky sleeveless dude in the JUNIP video. Good Halloween idea. Do you think he is German?
