Album Of The Day – Look Mexico…

Look Mexico “This Is Animal Music” (Lujo)

The real cover art is on the right but perhaps the band should have gone with the one on the left…that’s my opinion at least. Anyway, I got the debut full-length from Look Mexico in the mail last week. Wow, what a tremendous leap forward for the band. I reviewed last year’s The Crucial EP here. What is up with the return of so many great noodley (real) emo bands lately? Not sure, but I am loving it. Check out some of the new songs on the band’s myspace page here. Release date is July 14th via Lujo Records.

Album Of The Day – The Ackleys…

The Ackleys “The Ackleys” (House Of Love)

I finally got a hold of the debut full-length from Birmingham, Alabama’s The Ackleys. I raved about the band’s second release here. Their debut is just as good and perhaps even a little more diverse. I am eagerly awaiting the band’s summer touring schedule. I mean, we do have to wait for half the band to graduate high school before they go out on the road. You can check out the video for the first song, “Chinaman”, off this great debut here.

Album Of The Day – Idlewild…

Idlewild “Make Another World” (Red/Sanctuary)

- Ok, so Idlewild’s new album won’t be making my “Best Album Cover” feature anytime soon. However, the band has made a fine return with Make Another World. The album follows up the slight disappointment of their last album, Warnings/Promises and a split from their record label. This band can flat out write some great songs and they prove they still have it in them. Not quite sure why these guys have never caught on stateside.

The Rosebuds “Night Of The Furies” (Merge)

I am fresh off of seeing a fantastic performance from The Rosebuds last night at The Art Bar in Columbia. The band is quickly becoming one of my personal favorites. Their new album, Night Of The Furies, comes out April 10th and is yet another impressive step for the band.

Album Of The Day – Life At These Speeds…

Life At These Speeds “Life At These Speeds” (Level Plane)

- Life At These Speeds album “To Your Health” was #4 on my Best of 2006 list. And while that album has been a huge part of my playlist in the last six months, I have recently revisited the band’s self-titled 2004 debut record. While not as polished or mature as “To Your Health”, you could see that greatness was just around the corner. Life At These Speeds are one of the best bands going today. Simply unstoppable.

Album Of The Day – Andrew Bird…

Andrew Bird “Armchair Apocrypha” (Fat Possum)

- I am sitting at home right now feeling nauseous from getting a wisdom tooth pulled this morning and trying not to gag on my gauze. Lovely I know. Anyway, Andrew Bird’s new album, “Armchair Apocrypha”, is keeping me company. People who are ridiculously talented piss me off. Needless, to say Andrew Bird is one of those people. But, I seriously love his music…it’s off the hook as the kiddies like to say. The man who delivered my favorite album of 2005 has returned with another stellar record. I’ll have a review up closer to the album’s March 20th release date. I’m off to the couch.

Album Of The Day – Kill Holiday…

Kill Holiday “Somewhere Between Wrong Is Right” (Revelation)

- Kill Holiday transformed from a post-hardcore band into a brit-pop/shoegaze band during their existence. And they did it rather well too. 1999’s “Somewhere Between Wrong Is Right” was the band’s last work. I either sold it or lost it years ago. But, I found a copy of it the other day and bought it. It has aged gracefully and sounds damn good.

Hotpipes “Hotpipes” (Liquid Panda)

- I’m a little lost as to how to describe these guys. I will say that this is definitely one of the better unsolicited records I have received since I started Sound As Language over a year ago. Review will be coming shortly (if I can figure out what the hell to write).

– Shoegaze lives on with bands like The Brother Kite. This is a great record that fans of guitar layered pop will certainly fall in love with. No review today. SAL is finally winding 2006 down. Things will be a little more sporadic here over the last few weeks of the year. I am listening to all my 2006 releases over and over again in preparation for my year end list. I will have a few more reviews to post next week before I get into to my Top 30 of 2006. In the meantime, sit tight.

Chin Up Chin Up “This Harness Can’t Ride Anything” (Suicide Squeeze)

- Happy Thanksgiving everybody! Reviews will be back on Monday. My album of the day is the fantastic follow up to the Chin Up Chin Up’s promising debut, “We Should Have Never Lived Like We Were Skyscrapers” which was great in it’s own right. Not too much has changed really…the band just seems even more focused here. This is a great album that I will be reviewing soon. Check these guys out.

Album Of The Day – Headlights / More Blog Crap…

in Album Of The Day, Music, Music Musings, Random Thoughts

Headlights “Kill Them With Kindness” (Polyvinyl)

- Since seeing this band live last week I have listened to this album numerous times. It’s great indie/electronic pop with some shoegazer qualities thrown in. Alright, so I think I finally fixed the mp3s with no help from EZ Archive. There are still some older mp3 links to fix but the majority of them should be good to go with no sign in required. Let me know if there are any issues.

Brand New “The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me” (Interscope)

- No review today. I’ve been too busy listening to the new Brand New album. Please let me know if you are having issues with the mp3s. For some odd reason, the new links will not download unless I am logged into EZ Archive (totally assinine!). So, if I am logged in, which I should be 95% of the time, the mp3s should work fine. Some of the older mp3 links still may not work though. I went back and updated a bunch of them today but still have a few left to do (pain in the ass!). I will try my best to finish those up ASAP. Reviews may be sporadic at best this week. Fall makes me lazy and I hate EZ Archive!
