Band You Should Know: Auxes

posted by Will

in BYSK, Music Musings

Taken from Auxes‘ myspace page here: “Started as Dave’s post-move-to-NC, for some reason leave all the people you love to play music with in Chicago, solo recording project, Auxes has now turned into a six piece with two drummers. Luckily we’re still able to bribe Noah to travel down from Chicago to play with his expatriated yet homeland-returned friends, errr, friend rather. All the involved play in other bands: Dave (Milemarker, Challenger, Summer Sorcerer), Noah (Milemarker, Challenger, Head of Skulls), Pete (Challenger, Summer Sorcerer), Mike (Fin Fang Foom), John (Caltrop, Hazerai), Ben (Ben Davis Band, Milemarker, Bats and Mice). I probably missed a few bands in there… Welcome to NC. We all share down here.”

- These songs are great! With a line-up like this though, I guess it should be no surprise. Stoked on hearing the whole album which comes out on Lovitt Records in October.

Band You Should Know: Picture Books In Winter

posted by Will

in BYSK

Wading through countless Myspace friend requests is a daunting and tedious task at times. But, Picture Books In Winter is why I do it. The Cardiff, UK band swirls the sounds of Dischord/D.C. ala Q And Not U with the more nuanced side of McLusky and a helping of indie pop akin to Pomegranates. Add strings to the mixture and you have a remarkable and compelling finished product. The band only has a five song demo to their credit but it is more than impressive. You can download the band’s demo on the cheap from Amie Street. Hop on before it gets too crowded.

Band You Should Know: Chillerton

posted by Will

in BYSK

Got a hold of the fantastic Bleak Unison LP (via Document Recordings) from UK’s Chillerton recently and this band definitely deserves to be heard. Fans of gruff pop punk, Leatherface and No Idea Records should eat this up. Chillerton are able to distinguish themselves by adding a bit more melody to their rough and tumble sound. Chillerton are on the higher scale when it comes to this genre and this is only the band’s debut. Bleak Unison is only the sound of Chillerton getting their feet wet. What lies ahead for the band is certainly exciting.

Band You Should Know: Fences

posted by Bradley

in BYSK

Every now and again, the hours spent clicking random Myspace links pays off in a big way. Seattle’s Chris Mansfield and Matt Beacham, collectively known as Fences, are easily my best accidental find of the year. An intimate, introspective brand of poppy acoustic folk music that isn’t just another drop in the bucket of Northwestern singer/songwriters. Everything about the four songs I’ve heard from the forthcoming The Ultimate Puke EP (due out in September – don’t let the name fool you) is instantly memorable and will have you singing right along after the first play. This is a beautiful collection of songs to say the least.

I haven’t been this excited about an acoustic songwriter since Mike Kinsella started recording as Owen — it’s that good. I suspect that you’ll be hearing a lot about Fences in the future, so you might as well hop on board now.

Band You Should Know: The Muggabears

posted by Will

in BYSK

Can we have a best new music/best album cover post in one? Well, not quite considering the The Muggabears‘ 2007 EP, Night Choreography came out over a year ago. Luckily though, I finally got the chance to hear this Brooklyn band a few days ago and was left quite floored by the experience. Night Choreography (brilliant title as well) is like a rebirth of Sonic Youth but the band injects their own personality. This is fuzzed out noisy guitar pop at its absolute finest though. The song “Rings” is incredible…it’s like Walter Schreifels (Quicksand, Rival Schools) singing for a fractured noise-pop band. So yeah, I’m stunned, what’s next Muggabears?

Band You Should Know: Stapleton

posted by Will

in BYSK

Continuing within the fertile grounds of the UK scene, Glasgow, Scotland’s Stapleton is yet another amazing band. Stapleton are gearing up for the release of their long-awaited new album, Rest And Be Thankful, which is set to appear in early May. Rest And Be Thankful follows up the band’s tremendous 2005 album, Hug The Coasts. Much akin to my last Band You Should Know, This Town Needs Guns, Stapleton eschew the hectic pace of many of their peers for subtler melodic tones. I should have a review for Rest And Be Thankful in the coming months just as soon as I get my grubby hands on it.

Band You Should Know: Tin Armor

posted by Will

in BYSK

I just got a hold of Tin Armor’s 2007 debut, A Better Place Than I Have Been, and it is an endearing slice of indie/pop/punk. The band hails from Columbus, Ohio and just finished a tour with fellow Ohioans, the SAL-approved and awesome Annabel. Tin Armor bring to mind the warm tones of a band like Smoking Popes. Both teeter on the line between indie rock and pop punk with remarkable precision. I just ordered the band’s new 7-inch and I am hoping for more of the same. I will have a review up for that next month but until now, do yourself a favor and check out Tin Armor.

Band You Should Know: This Town Needs Guns

posted by Will

in BYSK

Seriously, what is going on in the UK these days? So many great new bands it’s enough to make your head spin. Well add yet another to the list. I first mentioned This Town Needs Guns in my favorite EPs of 2007. The band’s split with the equally awesome Cats And Cats And Cats was tremendous. I downloaded (legally…thanks eMusic) the band’s two other singles earlier this year and am left even more impressed. This Town Needs Guns are perhaps a tad more laid back compared to the frantic energy of a lot of their UK peers. But, while the pace may be a bit slower at times, the result is just as powerful. The video below is for a song off their split called “26 Is Dancier Than 4.” And I posted a song from one of the singles as well. How is that for an amazing song title and a great pick up line?

Band You Should Know – Hostage Calm

You know, I certainly don’t find too much hardcore that I can sink my teeth into anymore but there is something different about Hostage Calm. Combining so many awesome elements from the many different time periods and sub-genres of hardcore, Hostage Calm really are forging their own path. Hostage Calm’s impressive four-song demo can be downloaded here. You can also purchase the demo 7″ soon from Headcount Records and the band’s debut album is scheduled for May on Redscroll Records.

Very cool indeed.

Dawn Landes might be best known for her bluegrass cover of Peter Bjorn And John’s hit “Young Folks” but she’s got her own material as well. Landes just released her brand new album called Fireproof. She is opening up for Will Hoge and Jason Isbell currently and the trio will be swinging through my neck of the woods Tuesday, February 26th at Headliners in Columbia, SC. I shall be there. “Bodyguard” is the first single off of Fireproof.

Band You Should Know – Thieves And Assassins

Thieves And Assassins may not be doing anything new but they are certainly doing it well. The Long Island band is comprised of former members of hardcore bands like This Is Hell, The Backup Plan and Heads Vs. Breakers. While there are some short bursts of pure hardcore, the band stays more on the melodic side of the tracks. Bands like Dag Nasty and Bad Religion instantly come to mind. However, there are also some noticeable elements of melodic pop/punk bands like Samiam or even the pop energy of Lifetime. And all of this is done with a modern twist. The band released their debut full length, Martyr Brigade, last year. Clocking in at 9 songs in only 23 minutes, the repeat button should get a nice work out.

Band You Should Know – Fuck Buttons

in BYSK, Music, Music Video

Could UK’s Fuck Buttons be 2008’s answer to Battles? A band that I would never figure to like but I just do damnit! Blurring the line between noise and melody, the duo’s Street Horrrsing LP is droney, hypnotic and utterly beautiful. The album is out March 18th on ATP Recordings.

Band You Should Know – Nothington

posted by Will

in BYSK, Mp3, Music

Add another 2007 release that I missed out on for far too long. Nothington features two ex-members of Tsunami Bomb but this is far from that band’s sound. Nothington play awesome punk rock n’ roll. Frontman Jay Northington’s gravelly vocals recall the great Frankie Stubbs of Leatherface (I think I see a Leatherface sticker on that guitar). Much like Leatherface, Nothington have a keen sense of melody that slowly reveals itself from beneath all the gruffness. And there is no way to deny the Social Distortion influence that pervades these songs. Mike Ness would certainly be proud. Any fans of Lucero, The Gaslight Anthem or The Loved Ones should all find something to love here as well. All In is quite a statement for a debut record.

Band You Should Know: Juhu Beach

posted by Will

in BYSK, Mp3, Music

juhubeach.jpg Sometimes bands slip through the cracks here at SAL headquarters. I remember getting Juhu Beach’s 2007 EP, Scenes of Abandoned Industry, a while back but for some reason the disc never resonated with me. That is up until the last month or so when I gave it a few more spins. The Seattle band plays an infectious blend of indie rock and angular punk. I find it stunning that the band’s press release does not mention Les Savy Fav (one more reason to throw the press sheets in the trash I guess). That is the band I keep coming back to when listening to Juhu Beach. The band has that same remarkable diversity. They can slap you with some sassy punk rock and then sing you to sleep with cunning melodies. There are also elements of Dischord punk as well as Chapel Hill-influenced indie rock like Archers Of Loaf. Juhu Beach are certainly pulling from all the right places here. So, please accept my apologies boys. There’s simply no excuse for me sleeping on something this good for so long.

Band You Should Know – Takka Takka

I am under the weather tonight but Takka Takka’s We Feel Safer At Night is helping me through it all. I discovered the band by chance recently. My friend got tix for us to go to a Travis Morrison show on my upcoming NYC visit. And it just so happened that Takka Takka is opening. I requested a copy of We Feel Safer At Night from the band’s label (Ernest Jenning Record Co.) and they were kind enough to send me one in record time. After quite a few listens, I am stoked to see the band live this Friday at Union Hall in Brooklyn. The band brings to mind a wealth of influences on We Feel Safer At Night. I would have to say Pavement and The Velvet Underground are the most notable although there are also flashes of The Flaming Lips, Yo La Tengo and Grandaddy. Great stuff!
