Local Spotlight: Schematics

posted by Will

in Local Spotlight, Music Video

Schematics, a Columbia supergroup of sorts (and good friends of mine), played their first show last weekend and I took some video. These guys haven’t played in bands in quite some time so I went in with moderate expectations but left quite impressed. For fans of mid to late 90’s indie/emo but with a nice punch to it. Would love to get opinions/comparisons on these guys…and be nice.

Schematic consists of ex-members of:
Hurt Reynolds
Ray Brower
Donbravado
Aracari
Adderall

The birth of The Angry Whale

in Local Spotlight

It’s good to have Sean Rayford back doing another zine here in Columbia. His previous endeavor, The Whipping Post, was always an entertaining read. Now he’s back with The Angry Whale which you can check out right here.

Local Spotlight – Magnetic Flowers

magneticflowers1.jpgI flat out suck sometimes when it comes to how slowly I catch on to great local bands. Indie pop outfit Magnetic Flowers are proof of that. I had heard good things about the band but never had the pleasure of seeing them live til this past weekend (my own fault of course). I left with a new album in my hands and quite impressed with about every aspect of the band. I did not even realize that Falling Off A Building mastermind Adam Callum was in the band…somebody slap me! The band was tight and full of energy as they rolled through a fabulous set of songs from their current album, Presents Pasts and Futures, as well as some new numbers. The new material is what stood out to me though. Magnetic Flowers are certainly on to something special here. I am excited about the possibility of watching it all come to fruition with a front row seat.

Local Spotlight – Death Becomes Even The Maiden

posted by Will

in Local Spotlight, Mp3, Music, Release Dates

Only one relevant release this week. So, in lieu of my usual Tuesday releases post, I will just be spotlighting Columbia’s own Death Becomes Even The Maiden. The band releases their long awaited EP, The Arrangement on November 30th. DBETM rises from the ashes of Columbia mainstays Bolt and From Safety To Where. The instrumental strengths of Bolt bolster the minimal post-punk of From Safety To Where and DBETM finds the perfect middle ground. The Arrangement comes out on French label Vie Devant Soi.

Local Spotlight – Falling Off A Building

Falling Off A Building is yet another local band here in Columbia, SC that I have been meaning to write about. I saw the band open up for Brother, Sister a while back and was pleasantly surprised. The band revolves around singer/songwriter Adam Callum. His energetic style and unique lyrical take on life was addicting to watch in a live setting. I picked up the band’s five song EP and it stands up quite nicely to the live show. Falling Off A Building brings to mind people like Ben Folds, Counting Crows and even The Weakerthans perhaps. Nicely done.

Local Spotlight – Black Swan…

Black Swan is a local (Columbia, SC) band who I had the pleasure of seeing this weekend. As I watched the band I could tell they were still trying to adapt in a live setting. Still, I was shocked to learn after the show that it was only the band’s second performance together. That fact left me even more impressed with the band’s expansive and engaging sound. Black Swan may only be in their infancy but the sky is the limit. The band has already recorded a five song EP which they were graciously giving away for free this weekend. I will have a short review up for that soon.
