Look Mexico – Gasp Asp Limited Edition Prints / Test Pressings

Shameless self-promotion!

Look Mexico – New Super Fun Awesomeness (and other shenanigans from Tiny Engines )
——————————————————————-

* Limited Edition Gasp Asp Jackets
* Win a Gasp Asp Test Pressing
* New 7-inch from Tigers Jaw

——————————————————————-

Limited Edition Look Mexico Gasp Asp Jackets

We recently came into possession of some really sweet-looking limited edition hand-screen printed Gasp Asp jackets with exclusive artwork by the band’s Josh Mikel/Sharkguts. Our buddy Dustin Garrett did us a huge favor by pressing these bad boys for us…and they look so rad. Not only did he use three different paper color variations, he was also generous enough to give us 54 copies, all of which I numbered by hand.

Each one of these special jackets comes with a green Gasp Asp 7-inch, standard jackets and a free mp3 download code. You can pick one up here. Act fast though because we’ve only got 31 left (9 white, 9 yellow, 13 black). You can try to order all three colors but if these go quickly, I can’t guarantee anything. If there’s an issue, I’ll drop you a line and we’ll figure it out. Also, don’t forget to list your color choice in the notes!

Win a Gasp Asp Test Pressing
——————————————————————-

In other Look Mexico news, we have two Gasp Asp test pressings that we’d like to give away. At first there were close to 20 people who emailed me about buying one of these. It was a little overwhelming because honestly kids, they only cost us around 60 cents to make. I understand there’s a collectibility factor going on here, but I still couldn’t take the pressure of deciding who was or wasn’t deserving enough of one. In the end, I concluded that the only fair thing would be to randomly give them away.

Here’s the dealio – anyone who pre-orders a copy of our second 7-inch release, Spirit Desire from the amazing Scranton, PA band Tigers Jaw, will automatically be entered to win a test pressings for both Gasp Asp and Spirit Desire. The Look Mexico test pressing will also come with one of the limited edition prints mentioned above, so that’s pretty cool. And even though we only have two of these grand prize packages to give away, a bunch of runners-up will receive the Tigers Jaw test pressing as well.

Pre-order Spirit Desire from Tigers Jaw
——————————————————————-

Lastly, whether you’re hoping to win a test pressing or not, you really should pre-order a copy of the Spirit Desire 7-inch because it’s an great release. It took us a while for us to decide on a proper follow up to our first awesome 7-inch from Look Mexico, but settling on Tigers Jaw was a no brainer.

If you’re not familiar with this incredible five piece, listen to a couple mp3s from their 2008 full-length below. Likewise, the songs on Spirit Desire are amazing, keeping with Tigers Jaw’s nostalgic yet completely fresh indie-rock-cum-pop-punk M.O., but injecting even more tension, energy and ridiculously contagious melodies into the mix. For more pressing info and to pre-order a copy, go here.

Tiny Engines + Tigers Jaw = 7 inches of Awesome

posted by Will

in Music News

It recently occurred to me that amidst all the excitement surrounding Tiny Engines‘ decision to partner with the amazing Tigers Jaw – between the hustle, bustle and shenanigans involved in releasing records – we completely forgot to make any sort of formal declaration regarding the label’s latest vinyl endeavor. In fact, it totally just dawned on me that aside from a handful of people I’ve casually mentioned it to, no one even knows about our newest, sweetest little slab of 7-inch awesomeness, Spirit Desire.

On that note, Tiny Engines is officially confirming that it will release Spirit Desire, the latest 7-inch from Scranton, PA’s Tigers Jaw.

Furthermore, Tiny Engines would like to make a second, equally momentous announcement: Spirit Desire is now available for pre-order. To procure your copy, go here.

There – I’m sure the Blogosphere is blowing the hell up right about now. Read more

Farewell Touch & Go (Updated Yet Again)

posted by Will

in Music News

Sad news today that Touch & Go will likely be closing their doors and only handling back catalog from now on. I assume this means sister label Quarterstick is done as well. So many great bands have passed through these two labels. It will be interesting to see where everybody ends up. Thanks for the memories.

Second Update: Owner Corey Rusk released this statement:

It is with great sadness that we are reporting some major changes here at Touch and Go Records. Many of you may not be aware, but for nearly 2 decades, Touch and Go has provided manufacturing and distribution services for a select yet diverse group of other important independent record labels. Titles from these other labels populate the shelves of our warehouse alongside the titles on our own two labels, Touch and Go Records, and Quarterstick Records.

Unfortunately, as much as we love all of these labels, the current state of the economy has reached the point where we can no longer afford to continue this lesser known, yet important part of Touch and Go’s operations. Over the years, these labels have become part of our family, and it pains us to see them go. We wish them all the very best and we will be doing everything we can to help make the transition as easy as possible.

Touch and Go will be returning to its roots and focusing solely on being an independent record label. We’ll be busy for a few months working closely with the departing labels and scaling our company to an appropriate smaller size after their departure. It is the end of a grand chapter in Touch and Go’s history, but we also know that good things can come from new beginnings.

ONE SMALL STEP FOR LANDMINES – Free Digital EP Out Now

* Download If You Could Get Over Me
* Shows with Jim Ward
* Appearing at Invisible Children Benefit

——————————————————-

One Small Step For Landmines (Tallahassee, F.L.) is now offering its new acoustic EP, If You Could Get Over Me, for free digital download. Snag your copy here.

The download includes six brand-new songs, plus an eight-page booklet with art and design by the incomparable Jerrod Landon Porter. JLP also redesigned the band’s myspace page…which normally I wouldn’t mention (because myspace sucks it) but it’s worth checking out for the animated graphic of Kevin riding his bike around the city.

In other news (and I realize this affects approximately two people on my mailing list), One Small Step For Landmines is playing five shows in Australia with Jim Ward (Sleepercar / Sparta) beginning tomorrow. For everyone else – or at least those of you on the West Coast – the band will also be playing the Invisible Children Benefit Concert in Hollywood, C.A. on December 19th. The show will feature acoustic performances from Dustin Kensrue (Thrice), Chris Conley (Saves The Day), Jon Foreman (Switchfoot) and Jim Ward.

One Small Step For Landmines released the digital single Good Men Die Young And I’m Not Feeling Well in July of this year while its debut Self-titled full-length came out in September of 07. The band is currently writing and recording songs for a new long-player due out in 2009.

POLAR BEAR CLUB – Touring the World (sort of)

* U.S. Shows with Fireworks begin on Friday (Dec 05 – 16)
* Canadian dates with Cancer Bats (Dec 17 – 21)
* UK / European tour with The Gaslight Anthem, Frank Turner (Feb 02 – Mar 04)

——————————————————-

No rest for New York’s Polar Bear Club as they continue with a heavy touring schedule in support of their Red Leader debut, Sometimes Things Just Disappear (released 03/11/08).

Beginning on Friday, the boys will leave for nearly two weeks of shows in the U.S. with Fireworks, immediately followed by five days in Canada with Cancer Bats. Then in February, the band will travel overseas for a month of shows in the UK and Europe with The Gaslight Anthem and Frank Turner.

While it’s not exactly a “continuous” world tour, 14 countries in the span of three months counts for something, right? Consider that in that same time period, I will have traveled to exactly one state. Maybe two if I decide to drive ten minutes due south.

If you’d like to attend any of these shows or speak with Polar Bear Club, drop me a line here.

Look Mexico – Pre-order New 7-inch

posted by Will

in Music News

Hey everybody, Tiny Engines is finally born! The record label that I have started with some friends (Chuck Daley from Beartrap PR and Jeff Meyer from Jena Berlin) is finally upon us. Check out the press release below and definitely check out the music. I think this is Look Mexico’s best stuff yet. And buy a 7″ so I can at least break even cause I am broke! Thanks!

——————————————————-
LOOK MEXICOGASP ASP vinyl now available for pre-order!
——————————————————-

* Pre-order 7-inch now from new label Tiny Engines (cause we’ll be out of business in six months)
* Vinyl available in three colors – ships on November 25th
* Digital version from Lujo Records available now

——————————————————-

GASP ASP, the newest 7-inch from Tallahassee, Florida’s LOOK MEXICO, is available now for pre-order from fledgling, destined-to-fail label, Tiny Engines.

Go here to grab a copy of this tasty slab of plastic. Orders will ship on November 25th and will include an mp3 download code for the songs.

Undoubtedly Look Mexico’s best work to date, Gasp Asp builds on the foundation of their brief-but-impressive catalog – the dynamic instrumental interplay, undeniably catchy melodies and a knack for keeping things unpredictable. Still, these three tracks inject a welcomed sense of maturity and craftsmanship, and Look Mexico sound more assured of their songwriting abilities than ever before. The band has truly discovered its own unique voice in indie rock.

On the other hand, Tiny Engines hasn’t done a single noteworthy thing, save for this 7-inch…which isn’t even out yet. Having said that, we’re fairly confident that we put together a really sweet first release. There are 1000 copies of the vinyl being pressed in three colors: light blue (200), white (200) and green (600). We also printed jackets (art by the band’s Josh Mikel / layout by JLP) featuring matte-finish and two foil-stamping variations. Of course, it’s easy to put together an awesome package when you’re working around three amazing songs.

Listen to “You’re Not Afraid Of The Dark, Are You?” (mp3)

Speaking of mp3s, in September Lujo Records released a four-song digital EP version of Gasp Asp. If vinyl doesn’t get you all hot and bothered, the EP is available from iTunes now. And don’t forget to check out other Look Mexico albums from Lujo, including The Crucial Collection and their awesome debut full-length, This Is Animal Music

It’s also worthwhile to note that Suburban Home is taking pre-orders for a split 7-inch between Look Mexico and pals Fake Problems. The vinyl is the first volume in Suburban Home / Vinyl Collective’s Under The Influence Series.

- Gasp Asp makes an ambitious statement through an extended sonic palette.Delusions of Adequacy
- Gasp, Asp is both lyrically and sonically superior to any of the band’s past material.Captain Obvious
- Their musicianship is beyond reproach, and I swear they didn’t bribe me with pizza to say that.Buzzgrinder
- Armed with a new found bite, Gasp Asp is Look Mexico’s most cohesive release to date.Consequence of Sound
- Gasp Asp provides listeners with some quality content that points to Look Mexico’s continued evolution.Pastepunk.com
- The ambitious multi-instrumental sonics of Gasp Asp should leave former associations in the past where they belong.REAX

The pride of Poughkeepsie, THE COLOR WHEELS, will be hitting the road today for a short tour across the Northeast in support of their Self-Titled debut full-length on Viper Bite Records.

Made up of husband and wife duo of Jon and Psalm Sebastian, the band has put together a batch of cunningly addictive songs about pirate ships, playing house and pitching tents. Don’t be fooled though – therein lies the undeniable heart and contagious innocence of The Color Wheels. Still, behind the infectious guitars and sparkling melodies there are bursts of perfectly crafted power pop with a surprising attention to detail. If you rocked out to The Promise Ring’s Very Emergency back in the day, The Color Wheels Self-Titled debut is a must have.

* West Coast tour begins tomorrow (Nov 06 – 22)
* Apocalypse Youth out now

LANTERNS rise triumphantly from the hollowed indie rock grounds of San Diego with Apocalypse Youth, a fiery collection of noisy pop songs. Beginning tomorrow, the band will take their show on the road for a quick West Coast swing in support of the new five-song EP.

As the opening chords of distortion ring from Apocalypse Youth and the drums build to a sharp climax, there is a genuine feeling of excitement. The four young men of Lanterns do nothing to quell that anticipation across the EP’s raging sound. The band washes its songs in waves of glorious feedback, yet buried right beneath the surface lay shards of penetrating melody. With anthemic guitars and powerful, thought-provoking lyrics, Lanterns is a beacon of hope in this crowded musical landscape. Imagine if you will And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead without all the pretension weighing them down.

From Punknews.org:

Vinyl Collective has announced the first in their Under the Influence series. The aim of the series is to feature bands covering tracks that have influenced their song writing and each edition will feature art by Mitch Clem of Nothing Nice to Say/My Stupid Life fame. Mitch is designed his artwork around the album art of the song being covered.

For this first release, Fake Problems are covering “I’m A Ramblin’ Man” by Waylon Jennings and Look Mexico are covering “Brandy, You’re a Fine Girl by Looking Glass. The 7″s will come with a coupon that will allow you to download the tracks as mp3s. The 7″ will be pressed as an edition of 1,000 copies (300 on turquoise / white half and half, 700 on yellow vinyl).

Hello friends!

We have a new EP for sale and we are super-excited!

We’re getting ready to finish the full-length record ‘Church of the Haunted South’ due out by the end of the year but we need your help. As you can probably guess, touring and recording can get pretty expensive so we’re trying really hard to raise money to help us pay to finish our record. So we’ve set up a donation link and we would really appreciate your help! Just go to www.thewintersounds.com.

We’ve had some wonderful shows recently. We also have a lot of great shows coming up so please keep an eye on myspace. We are always on the road and we are coming to your town!

Thank You

- Help out a great band and throw these guys something. I downloaded the EP and can’t wait to hear everything the band still has in store. Here is another new song called “Trophy Wife”. Unmixed and unmastered yet still another winner from the band with a thousand hooks!

Autolux: “Audience No. 2″

posted by Mattison

in Music Musings, Music News

It has been about 4 years since the release of Future Perfect, easily one of my favorite albums in recent time, and I’d almost forgotten about Autolux promising a 2008 release until yesterday when I ran across a new track entitled “Audience No. 2″ that the band put up on their website. Interestingly it is in a “pay if you feel like it” type presentation, which I guess is thanks to Radiohead(?). Either way, the song is right on par with the Autolux sound: catchy drum loop, plenty of feedback, heavy fuzz, accompanied with sort of out-there castrato vocals. I’m digging it.

Although the band has given a name to the new album: Transit Transit, they still have yet to stamp a date on the release. Like Tom Petty said, “the waiting is the hardest part”.
