From The Color Wheels‘ sweet Self-Titled album that I reviewed here…man that was a long time ago. Anyway, this is the first I’ve seen of this video and this song still rules my world. Of course be sure to check out lead man Jon Sebastian’s main musical outlet, Paper The Operator. I’ll have a little write-up on PTO’s new-ish album, Goodbye God, going up soon as well. Oh, and you can find more info on all of Sebastian’s projects over at the one and only Viper Bite Records.

Look Mexico “You Stay. I Go. No Following.” from Look Mexico HD on Vimeo.
This song is from Look Mexico’s recent 7″ release as well as their upcoming Suburban Home album, To Bed To Battle, which is set for a March release. I will be very interested to see what people have to say about this record as the band is definitely moving in a different direction.
Stegosaur’s “A Headache” is from the band’s Adventure 7″ (which I just ordered) on Seafoam Recordings. Thanks to Jordan for the heads up! For fans of early Cursive, The White Octave and Criteria for sure. Speaking of, where the hell did Stephen Pederson disappear to?
So, yeah, I’m mildly obsessed with this band. “Tammy Faye” is off It’s A King Thing’s upcoming album, Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo. Really digging this song! The band is doing a video for each song on the new album. Schweet!
Check out the video below to see where the band’s inspiration came from…
Here is yet another new It’s A King Thing video for a track off the band’s last album, Proper Nouns. This one is for “Mush Mouth” and you can still download Proper Nouns for free from the band’s website. I will be posting a video tomorrow for a brand new song off the band’s upcoming album, Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.
Update: This is an updated version of “Mush Mouth” which will be on the band’s upcoming album.
This video and song are pretty ridiculous but in a totally awesome kind of way. Fang Island’s new Self-Titled album is out in February on Sargent House.
“Shirakashi” comes from Post Harbor’s upcoming album They Can’t Hurt You If You Don’t Believe In Them out February 23rd on Burning Building Recordings. I’m working the album for Beartrap PR and I think it’s amazing. I was a big fan of the band’s first album, Praenumbra.

New video for “Old Hobbies” from It’s A King Thing’s last album, Proper Nouns which you can still download for free from the band’s website. So, what the frick are you waiting for? Thanks to Evan from Into It Over It for the tweet heads up!

I saw Hop Along (formerly Hop Along, Queen Ansleis) for the first time last night and they were awesome. Check them out on the road if you get the chance. Here’s a video for their song “Second Name” courtesy of If You Make It. The song is on the band’s new 10-inch, Wretches, out on Salinas Records. I should have a review coming soon!

New Annabel video for “As It Happened” from the band’s amazing full-length debut, Each And Everyone, which sadly still has not been reviewed here at SAL. Come on contributors! The boys shot this during Kent Fest recently. I love it…gives me the grins every time I watch it!

I am seeing Sunny Day Real Estate tomorrow in ATL. I’m stoked on the show but a bit bummed that the set list, from what I hear, is extremely heavy on the first two albums. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the first two albums but the band’s third album, How It Feels To Be Something On, is still my personal favorite. Blasphemy, I know! I’m sure it will still be amazing though. “In Circles” and “Seven” are of course from SDRE’s groundbreaking debut, Diary. And I keep forgetting The Jealous Sound are opening…cherry on top! But, can I yell Knapsack songs at them?
I never thought I would be posting about Pearl Jam on SAL. But, as I have rediscovered the past lately (REM, The Smiths, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, etc), I’ve also delved back into Pearl Jam. “The Fixer” is off the band’s new album, Backspacer. It’s being proclaimed as the “fun” Pearl Jam album and I think that is a fair statement. The album is solid and this damn song has been stuck in my head all week.

New York City’s Black Train Jack holds a unique distinction with me as a music fan. They are the only band that I have ever written a fan letter to. I am not talking about an email or a myspace comment; I am saying an actual pen to paper and drop it in a mailbox fan letter.
After hearing their second album You’re Not Alone, which was released by Roadrunner Records in 1994, I wanted to tell the band how much I enjoyed the record and their punk version of Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker”.
What stood out to me with You’re Not Alone and their previous release No Reward (released on Roadrunner as well, in 1993) was how they could skillfully mix the catchiness of pop punk with the aggression and heaviness of hardcore. From You’re Not Alone, the song “What’s the Deal” highlights their talent of creating poppy songs that you bob your head to as you hear pounding bass beats.
The band also had a more positive message of a drug-free, violence-free lifestyle as evidenced by the track “Not Alone”. With lyrics like I don’t hurt myself internally/I’m poison free intentionally/A choice I made a long time ago/Because doing it up Friday nights/Going out and starting fights/These are things I don’t need to know and Because this is life and you’re in it/You’re the one who’s got to live/Take your time and choose your own way, Black Train Jack told the listener to forge their own path and to tread down the ones that are chosen for them.
The album’s only single, “Handouts” is still one of my favorite jams to this day. Black Train Jack also put out a video for the song about the struggles of friendship, featuring singer RoBorn wearing a work shirt, black sunglasses and a hat turned backwards: the complete 90’s punk uniform.
A few weeks after sending my letter I received a zine-style newsletter from the band with a note on the front thanking me for my letter and for listening to them. Unfortunately I never received another piece of mail from them or heard another new tune from them, as they broke up shortly thereafter. While these diehard New York Yankees fans parted ways, their simple, yet distinctive punk rock sound continues to thump through my speakers.
For fans of Black Train Jack and guitarist Ernie Parada, check out his new band, Higher Giant.
