Life Can Be So Dull

posted by Will

in Random Thoughts

- The site was down a bit this weekend as I had to upgrade Wordpress on the fly because of some security concerns. We’ve got all the posts updated except for July 09 it looks like. Hopefully those will be back soon. New posts will begin later today or tomorrow. Thanks for hanging around!

- I apologize the site has been dead for the last week+. I was in PA for about four days which was awesome but otherwise life has been sucking as work has been severely kicking my ass lately. Hopefully that will change soon and I can get back to having enough energy to care about music again. Thanks for hanging around regardless!

The Quest

posted by Will

in Random Thoughts

This is kind of an odd post for SAL but I figured what the hell. What’s the point in having a site if you can’t promote your own shit!? As most of you probably know I moonlight for Beartrap PR when I’m not slaving away at the real job and staying up til all hours of the night writing for this site. And I am on a quest to work full time at Beartrap. But for me to do this I need help finding more great bands and labels to work with. I’ve had so many people tell me to accept donations or start doing ads on SAL but that’s never been what the site is about. The greatest thing you can do for SAL is this: if you know of any bands or labels who might be interested in press work please pass their name my way or tell them to contact me. If you follow SAL you probably have a good idea of what I’m into and what I would be interested in. Beartrap is a little different than most press companies as in we only work what we like…crazy, right? We do a good job…just ask our bands!

Needless to say, all this is relevant to SAL cause if I didn’t have to work 30-40 hours a week at the real job I would have much more time to devote to the site. And that would mean posts/coverage of awesome bands would increase dramatically around here. And we all want that, don’t we?

Andrew’s Wheels Assistance Fund

posted by Will

in Random Thoughts

Andrew is a fellow Gamecock fan and I’ve been following his battle with cancer for a while now. Please help if you can! Thanks everyone!

Andrew is the most fun-loving and caring 9 year old you would ever meet despite battling for almost 2 years with one of the deadliest brain cancers DIPG. After 120 days Andrew has been cleared to leave a hospital, but due to being confined to the wheelchair the family is in desperate need of a wheelchair accessible van to help transport him from home to the hospital. Please help by giving to Andrew’s Wheels Assistance Fund. 100% of donations will go toward helping the family purchase the van. Please make donations in increments of $10.00 (you will be able to determine your total amount of donation at checkout). You will also receive a letter of thanks as a receipt for your charitable donation. Thank you for helping us to get Andrew on the road to recovery!

SAL will be dormant for the next ten days. I am heading on a much-needed beach vacation. We will be back on Monday July 20th with reviews on tap from Ian, Mercy and Court as well as a new contributor! And moi of course. If you need me you can email me at will@soundaslanguage.com but most likely I’ll only be responding to Beartrap-related stuff while I’m away. Ride the shark man!

SAL —> Beartrap

posted by Will

in Random Thoughts

Not much will be going on at SAL this week. I’m taking it easy as I have been way too busy for my health lately. I have unknowingly become webmaster general over at Beartrap as I have been working on that site a ton recently. We’re gonna try to start blogging on a regular basis at the Beartrap site instead of just having boring press releases all over the place. So, I might be spouting off about stuff over there this week instead. Come join us…who knows what will happen.

Spring Breaking

posted by Will

in Random Thoughts

Alright everyone, I am taking this week off to enjoy the weather and concentrate on getting ready for some upcoming Beartrap projects. This is something that will probably happen a bit more frequently in ‘09. Ah, such is life, I apologize.

Also, I think I announced this on Twitter recently but not sure if everyone (or anyone) saw it. SAL will start to have genre-specific weeks more often in the future. And if you have been paying attention during the last two weeks you will notice the site has already gone in that direction. Upcoming, I have a singer/songwriter week planned out and pop/punk should be close behind. Granted, this will not happen every week but should be fun regardless. See you in a week.

Oh, here’s what I’ve been listening to lately…

Annabel
The Appleseed Cast
Brian Bond
PJ Bond
Neko Case
Cheap Girls (still!)
Joie De Vivre
Morrissey
My Heart To Joy
Oceans
The Reptilian
Tigers Jaw
Touch Committee
Chris Wollard & The Ship Thieves

SAL —> Looking Ahead

posted by Will

in Random Thoughts

Before I run out for the weekend I wanted to put a few things out there. With my schedule getting busier and busier with Beartrap PR and Tiny Engines (hopefully!), SAL will be undergoing some changes. The site will only be publishing 2-3 reviews per week going forward. So, obviously, our scope is going to be a little smaller in that area and we will be a bit more picky in what is reviewed from now on. Feel free to keep sending stuff but please realize we are well past the days of being able to cover even a quarter of the stuff that comes into SAL headquarters.

The good news is that posts like Band Spotlights will continue to rise. The site, as you may have noticed so far this year, will definitely be concentrating on smaller/DIY bands in 2009. That is where I want to be and that has certainly been the most rewarding part of running SAL.

Other points of interest…

Band interviews “should” be coming back soon.

The site will not be reviewing or covering any major label affiliated releases from now on.

Okay, I think that is it for now. I’m out. See you on Monday.

- Will.

Beartrap bands Annabel and Makeout Party are playing at the New Brookland Tavern in Columbia tonight. Come on out for one of my rare public appearances and I will gladly buy you a beer. Annabel’s Now That We’re Alive was my #1 EP of 2008. Just sayin’!

Holiday Schedule

OK, thank god! Chuck’s top ten below is the last list that was submitted. I love you guys but I’m worn out on lists. Now, I just have to finish mine up and that will be that for 2008 at SAL. I should have the cumulutive readers’ list up this weekend as well as some others. EP/7″/Demo list will be up on Monday and my Top 40 (?) of 2008 on Tuesday and Wednesday. These plans are tentative at best. But, hopefully that will be how it all pans out. Then, the site and myself will be taking a much needed break.

SAL Is Growing Up

posted by Will

in Random Thoughts

On December 11th, 2005, SAL made its first post. If you would have told me that this site would still be going three years later I would have laughed in your face. But, whose laughing now? Seriously, who is that? Anyway, I’ve met lots of cool people and heard some amazing music along the way. So, I really can’t ask for much more than that. I guess we’ll keep this little train rolling along into 2009. Thanks for reading. You have no idea how much it means to me.

Finally updated the Reviews page! As we come up on our three year anniversary, the Lynus post below is SAL’s 600th review!

Also, readers feel free to start sending in your top ten year-end lists. You can email them to will@soundaslanguage.com and we’ll get them posted up on SAL.

SAL has been kind of dead lately. That’s alright, it goes that way sometimes. I’ve been a bit under the weather and uninspired and just busy with other stuff. So, we’ll try to start it all over again next week. You know the drill.

KKK: Inside American Terror

KKK: Inside American Terror at LocateTV.com

A bit of an unusual post for SAL. But, my high school buddy, Daniele Anastasion, actually produces this piece. I am always fascinated (terrified) by this kind of thing. Make sure to set your DVR! Also, check out Meet The Klan, her blog on the episode.

Randomness

posted by Will

in Random Thoughts

- Man, I can’t even believe we are in October already. This year has gone by in a whirlwind and I feel like I’ve been a useless bystander for most of it. I have finally been able to dive back into listening to a ton of music lately and it’s been cathartic to say the least. SAL should be consistently updated here in the near future. Thanks for hanging around in the lean times.

- I’m rather fascinated by the simplicity and ease of Tumblr. If the application wasn’t in such the beginning stages (no comments, no importing of blogs from other formats), I might think of moving SAL completely over. Right now I run on Wordpress but Tumblr is intriguing especially for the time-crunched person. I’ll be fooling around with some Wordpress themes that run on the ideas of Tumblr so SAL might be changing around a little bit. (Edit – Dave from If You Make It has informed me that both comments and importing can be done. Looks like I might be moving over to Tumblr soon afterall!)

Also, here are a few sites that have been keeping me occupied lately:

- The seminal site that really should need no introduction, Collective Zine, continues to plug along. Andy and the gang have been going since 1997 (had Al Gore even invented the internet yet?). I think everybody (including myself) thought they were dead as 2007 rolled along with little to no updates. But, thankfully they have returned better than ever in 2008!

- Can You See The Sunset is a site I always look to when thinking about the direction I want SAL to go. I’m trying to model my review writing after Eric, not too short but never too long. CYSTS remains one of my daily checks.

- Adam over at Dryvetyme Onlyne is one of my favorite writers. He has a ton of Austin City Limits coverage up on the site right now to study up on.

- Also, check out a What We Hate, a very cool blog I have just discovered and enjoyed thoroughly of late. Bryne does an excellent job and updates a ton.
