Best Of 2009: Volume Four

posted by Will

in Year End Lists

Here’s my final Top Ten of 2009. Click on the album cover for any more coverage.

#1 Tigers Jaw “Spirit Desire” 7″ (Tiny Engines)

The second release from Tiny Engines, a label I co-run with two other guys. Shameless self-promotion? Sure, but I can honestly say I listened to this release more than any other in 2009. Indie rock and pop punk mixed ever so perfectly!

#2 Brian Bond “Fire & Gold” (Self-Released)

It takes an awful lot for me to get excited about a singer/songwriter but Brian Bond did just that. The fact that he resides in relative obscurity is a shame. And he’s got another album in the can for 2010 that is just as good as Fire & Gold.

#3 Golden City “Self-Titled” (Magic Bullet)

Eric Richter of Christie Front Drive returns with a brilliant set of songs. Imagine CFD crossed with JEW.

#4 Everyone Everywhere “A Lot Of Weird People Standing Around” 7″ (Evil Weevil)

The second coming of The Promise Ring…at least at times it sure sounds like it. The new songs these guys have recorded sound incredible.

#5 Superchunk “Leaves In The Gutter” EP & “Crossed Wires” 7″ (Merge)

Other than Sunny Day Real Estate, there was no greater welcome back party for me than to have Superchunk return with a new set of songs. On their first two releases in years the band puts forth some of their most energetic material since their early days.

#6 Annabel “Each And Everyone” (Count Your Lucky Stars)

Following up on their brilliant EP in 2008 Annabel nail their first full-length. Understated indie rock with just the right amount of pop and power.

#7 Touch Committee “Winter Beard” (Self-Released)

I love when bands come from completely out of nowhere to floor me. Touch Committee did just that with Winter Beard.

#8 Oceans “Nothing Collapses” (Copper Lung)

Sadly, Oceans called it quits shortly after this release. Nothing Collapses is one of the best post rock records I have heard in years. So, can we put the nail in the post rock coffin now?

#9 My Heart To Joy “Seasons In Verse”(Topshelf)

Intelligent and pushing themselves beyond any genre constriction, My Heart To Joy are like a raging hardcore version of Trail of Dead.

#10 Broadway Calls “Good Views, Bad News” (Side One Dummy)

Broadway Calls are the best current pop/punk band period. Bar none.

Albums Of The Decade: Volume One

posted by Will

in Year End Lists

decade

SAL is the last stop on the Albums Of The Decade Blog Tour where ten diffierent indie blogs have chosen their favorite albums of the decade. Yesterday’s post came courtesy of The Punk Guy.

I’m keeping this initial list to a Top Ten but check back over the next few weeks as I’ll be listing forty more albums that in all will make up my Top 50 of the 00’s.

A couple of interesting facts…apparently 2000 was an amazing year. Six of my top ten albums hail from 2000 which is unbelievable. And not one album from 2004-2009 made my top ten.

Do yourself a favor and check out all the awesomeness of the blogs that participated. Thanks especially to Josh at Deckfight for spearheading this project! You rule dude!

Now onto my Top Ten of the decade…in order.

#1 The Weakerthans “Left And Leaving” (Hopeless – 2000)

weakerthansleaving

John K. Samson is a lyrical genius and Left And Leaving is probably my favorite album of all time. What else is there to say?

#2 The Lawrence Arms “The Greatest Story Ever Told” (Fat Wreck Chords – 2003)

lawrencearms

This is my perfect Arms record with every song bleeding into the next. Such an amazing and cohesive album especially considering you are dealing with two very distinct voices/songwriters. The Greatest Story Ever Told took the band from your typical pop/punk band to one that played pop/punk but was so much smarter (and better) than their peers. The arrangements, the songwriting, the back and forth sway of vocals…this album still gets me amped.

#3 Alkaline Trio “Maybe I’ll Catch Fire” (Asian Man – 2000)

atrio

Probably one of my most listened to albums of all time. This record seems to get lost in their discography but not for me as this is my favorite Trio album. Dark, catchy and downright disturbing lyrics, Maybe I’ll Catch Fire is a churning and ambitious record.  Which is probably why everything the band did after this has paled in comparison for me.

#4 The Dismemberment Plan “Change” (Desoto – 2001)

dplanchange

This is not even the band’s greatest album yet it still ends up on a Best of the Decade list. That’s how good The Dismemberment plan was. From my favorite live band of all time, Change saw the band maturing and discovering their own unique gifts. It was the final evolution in a band that had undergone an incredible metamorphosis. The D Plan stood by themselves in a league all their own. Of all the reunions taking place these days this is the one I truly long for.

#5 Modest Mouse “The Moon & Antarctica”  (Epic – 2000)

modestmousemoon

This is a sprawling and unique album that no one could have expected from Modest Mouse. Accessible major label debut? Not even close. The Moon & Antarctica is a haunting yet beautiful journey into the ambitious and frayed mind of Isaac Brock. So, the next frat boy that tells you how much they love Modest Mouse tell them to go listen to this album. I bet they will be singing a different tune afterwards.

#6 And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead “Source Tags & Codes”  (Interscope – 2002)

trailofdeadsourcetags

Source Tags & Codes is such a moving and powerful album. It is the true definition of art colliding with visceral rock music. It is a shame the band could never live up to the glory and exhilaration of this album. But when listening seven years later it is apparent we should have never expected them to top this masterpiece. “A middle finger to the institution”…still gets me every time.

#7 The Appleseed Cast “Mare Vitalis”(Deep Elm – 2000)

acastvitalis

The band’s 2002 double LP, Low Level Owl, might be considered their crowning achievement but when I want to listen to Appleseed Cast it will always be the band’s sophomore album, Mare Vitalis. The band started their journey away from typical emo songwriting here and it’s still their finest hour in my opinion.

#8 Cursive “Domestica” (Saddle Creek – 2000)

cursivedomestica

The relationship concept album has become Tim Kasher’s forte it seems. But Domestica was the songwriter’s first journey into the depth and despair of a troubled partnership. Emotionally raw, this is still the Cursive’s shining moment.

#9 Samiam “Astray” (Hopeless – 2000)

samiamastray

No best of list would be complete without Samiam who are quite possibly the greatest pop/punk band ever. Astray is about as strong as an album can be from start to finish.

#10 Frodus “And We Washed Our Weapons in the Sea” (Fueled By Ramen – 2001)

frodus

And We Washed Our Weapons in the Sea is perhaps one of the most under appreciated records of the decade and it is also one of the best. What is amazing to me is the fact that the band struggled to find a label to release the album. The record was finished in 1999 but was not released til 2001 by Fueled By Ramen. That label was in the throes of a change in musical direction and because of that the album seemed to fall by the wayside. This was the band’s swan song (although there has been talk of new Frodus material this year) and was unlike anything they had released before. And frankly it was different than anything else at the time as well.

My Heart To Joy: Seasons In Verse

Some bands are just not meant to be caged in. If you follow the trajectory of My Heart To Joy’s output, the band’s full-length debut, Seasons In Verse, might come as a surprise at first. But, when studied closer it is in fact the logical culmination of a burning that has noticeably been building up from the band’s core.

The instrumental first song, “Time Spent Breathing” reminds one of the lushness of Trail Of Dead rather than the melodic and screamy hardcore of the band’s past. And really that is a great comparison for My Heart To Joy (formerly My Heart To Joy At The Same Tone). The collision of art, indie and punk rock is quite similar to Trail Of Dead’s earlier material. Thankfully though, My Heart To Joy leave the pretension at the door. The band follows up the opener with the impassioned “Empty Homes” which leads into the album’s mid-paced mid-section. Songs like “Seasons In Verse”, “Worn Out Weather” and “Giving My Hands Away” may not be as in your face but they never lack the power and depth of the band’s more raging material either. “Old Capitals” is the collison of all facets of the band’s songwriting and is breathtaking in its delivery. My Heart To Joy even cover a Guided By Voices song, (ironically also covered by Trail Of Dead), “Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory”, with great success as they take the inner beauty of the song and turn it upside down with a healthy dose of vitriol.

When I reviewed the band’s seven-inch in January my RIYL was Hot Water Music, Small Brown Bike and Latterman…certainly good company to keep. But, with Seasons In Verse, My Heart To Joy have moved beyond those influences into more ambitious waters. The challenge with growth is to somehow maintain the signature quality of your songwriting. Even though the band has pushed their creativity into interesting new realms they have still managed to retain the raw and powerful nature of their earlier material. Seasons In Verse is proof of the dynamic and diverse heart that My Heart To Joy possess.

Lanterns – On Tour

LANTERNS – Fall Shows
——————————————————-
* West Coast tour begins tomorrow (Nov 06 – 22)
* Apocalypse Youth out now
——————————————————-

LANTERNS rise triumphantly from the hollowed indie rock grounds of San Diego with Apocalypse Youth, a fiery collection of noisy pop songs. Beginning tomorrow, the band will take their show on the road for a quick West Coast swing in support of the new five-song EP.

As the opening chords of distortion ring from Apocalypse Youth and the drums build to a sharp climax, there is a genuine feeling of excitement. The four young men of Lanterns do nothing to quell that anticipation across the EP’s raging sound. The band washes its songs in waves of glorious feedback, yet buried right beneath the surface lay shards of penetrating melody. With anthemic guitars and powerful, thought-provoking lyrics, Lanterns is a beacon of hope in this crowded musical landscape. Imagine if you will And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead without all the pretension weighing them down.
