Spring Breaking

posted by Will

in Random Thoughts

Alright everyone, I am taking this week off to enjoy the weather and concentrate on getting ready for some upcoming Beartrap projects. This is something that will probably happen a bit more frequently in ‘09. Ah, such is life, I apologize.

Also, I think I announced this on Twitter recently but not sure if everyone (or anyone) saw it. SAL will start to have genre-specific weeks more often in the future. And if you have been paying attention during the last two weeks you will notice the site has already gone in that direction. Upcoming, I have a singer/songwriter week planned out and pop/punk should be close behind. Granted, this will not happen every week but should be fun regardless. See you in a week.

Oh, here’s what I’ve been listening to lately…

Annabel
The Appleseed Cast
Brian Bond
PJ Bond
Neko Case
Cheap Girls (still!)
Joie De Vivre
Morrissey
My Heart To Joy

Heads Up!! New Appleseed Cast Demos!

posted by Will

in Heads Up

Definitely one of my all time favorite bands, Appleseed Cast, are thankfully still with us. After every release I worry that it might be the band’s last. But, supposedly a new album by the name of Sagarmatha is in the works. I would guess this will be a Spring 2009 release. The band has posted two new demos, “A Bright Light” and “Summer Before”, to their myspace page. “A Bright Life” is a 7 minute behemoth and I’m loving it!

This is The Appleseed Cast’s follow up to 2006’s wonderful Peregrine which I reviewed here.

Band (Mini) Interview: Empire Empire (I Was A Lonely Estate)

posted by Will

in Band Interviews

I recently talked with Keith Latinen of Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate). Here is the short Q&A.

Describe the band’s sound and major influences.

Keith: I guess I would describe our sound as a throw-back to the mid-90’s emo bands. The really pretty, heart-on-your sleeve gut-wrenching stuff that when you listen to it, you can tell the artist is pouring their heart out. So it’s only natural for our influences to start there- we’re talking Mineral, American Football, Appleseed Cast, Penfold, old Jimmy Eat World, Death Cab For Cutie, and The Get Up Kids.

What is the songwriting process like for Empire Empire?

Keith: The project started as a solo-project for me, so the first entire EP I did everything – all the instruments as well as the recording. At that point, I would write in blocks, so I would write every part for the first 30 seconds or so, then start the next part with guitars and build it up again. We actually recorded the full-length the same way, only Cathy played guitar as well. Nowadays though, Cathy or I will bring something to practice, or we just start jamming and molding it into whatever form it naturally takes.

What’s the band’s opinion on file-sharing?

Keith: At this point I think it would be foolish to be against something that is essentially the greatest form of advertisement. I think file-sharing has already helped us gain exposure as a band. It’s sort of a loaded question though, because we are all broke, and recording and pressing, and just being in a band is really expensive. It would be nice to be paid for every song someone downloads, but file-sharing is here, and I think it can help us more than hurt us. If it brings out someone to a show or makes us another fan, then that’s way more important than getting some change from a download.

What’s on the horizon for Empire Empire?

Keith: Right now, I am finishing the vocals up for our full-length, which we hope to put out sometime this summer. Past that, we are booking a tour for May, and hope to just keep touring and making music as long as we can.

Gray Young: Kindle Field

posted by Will

in Best New Music, Music Reviews

Gray Young hail from Raleigh, NC and play a curious mixture of moody indie rock. In this day in age where everyone feels the need to classify music (including myself sadly), it is nice to hear a band like Gray Young who defy that ability. No offense to the band cause I am nothing but impressed by them. However, Gray Young’s sound is not that unique. Yet, the band resists being pigeonholed at every twist and turn. Kindle Field contains six songs that run the gamut of atmospheric indie rock. From ambient instrumentals to melody-fueled anthems, Gray Young cover all the bases here. I can not help but think “A Weighted Lull” sounds like the most atmospheric song that Bloc Party forgot to write. Then the band moves on to instrumental tracks that recall post-rock bands like Explosions In The Sky or emo/post-rock behemoths like The Appleseed Cast. The closer “Tilling The Wind” sounds like Doves gone epic. There is subtle grandeur to these songs and whatever you want to call them, Gray Young seem perfectly fine with it. The band has successfully shed all labels and seem completely comfortable within their own skin.

Genre: Instrumental/Indie/Rock
