Band You Should Have Known: Lack

posted by Will

in BYSK

I always forget about Lack but then they will pop up on my shuffle and I remember just how much this band ruled. When writing this piece it started out as a Band You Should Know but unfortunately changed to a Band You Should Have Known cause Lack have officially broken up. Hailing from Denmark the band evolved from your solid but somewhat typical screamo band into a full rock solid behemoth. Lyrically the band pulled no punches and their sharp tongue went hand in hand with their powerful musical assault. All three of the band’s albums stand tall on their own merit but my personal favorite is Be There Pulse. You can’t go wrong with any of them though.

Band You Should Have Known: Rhythm Collision

posted by Will

in BYSHK

When I was going through the web pages of Suburban Home’s recent vinyl clearance sale I saw Rhythm Collision’s classic (at least to me) album Clobberer! on sale for $1.49. I’ve got most of my Dr. Strange pop/punk records on vinyl but for whatever reason that was one I was missing so I jumped on it. What a great record this is! The band released a bunch of stuff but 1995’s Clobberer! was the record that defined Rhythm Collision…it was the band at their ultimate best. For fans of snotty pop-PUNK this is a lost gem. I remember driving to Augusta, GA to see this band with (and I think I am remembering this correctly) Horace Pinker, MU 330 and Agent Orange. And I can remember writing to the band and getting an awesome full page letter back from the lead singer, Harlan Margolis…man, those were the days. Good times, good memories and a great band!

Of note should be the fact that when skimming Dr. Strange’s site recently they have the Clobberer! LP on sale for $1.00!

Band You Should Have Known: Gameface

gameface

Gameface were one of my favorite pop/punk bands that never seemed to get the love they deserved. The band balanced pop/punk with definite emo(tional) tendencies and Jeff Caudill was a singer who could actually sing. My first exposure to Gameface was on their 1995 album, Three To Get Ready. The album is still my favorite of theirs as it attains what so many emotional pop/punk bands failed to ever capture. The album was released on the underrated and seemingly forgotten Dr. Strange Records who released a ton of great overlooked stuff in the 90s. Three To Get Ready is the band’s fastest material and the band seemed to slow their pace with each subsequent album. Nevertheless, Gameface continued to put out quality material all the way up to their last album, 2003’s Four To Go which was released on Doghouse. 1999’s Every Last Time and 2000’s Always On were released on Revelation Records while all the band’s earlier material came courtesy of Dr. Strange. Caudill has some solo stuff available as well as a new band, Your Favorite Trainwreck, on the horizon.

Band You Should Have Known: Midwest Pen Pals

midwestpenpals

The “Midwest” in the name is a dead giveaway: these kids play 90’s style indie-emo. Sound Bend, IN’s Midwest Pen Pals‘ sound is often somewhere between Snowing and American Football, but never becomes entirely derivative like some bands in this emerging genre. After only a few months together, Midwest Pen Pals developed strikingly mature, original songs and a dedicated following on websites such as Last.fm. The band recently broke up, but I’m betting we’ll hear more from the ex-members of Midwest Pen Pals soon.

Bands You Should Have Known: The Starcrossed / Sweetheart

posted by Ben

in BYSHK

starcrossed

Every scene has one band that defines the era and area from which they hail. In the humble city of Kent, OH in the early 2000’s, The Starcrossed was the band that somehow united the young independent culture. Together from 1998-2005, the band skipped under the radar of national attention, but left an undeniable impression on the Tree City’s musical landscape.

The Starcrossed explored a wide variety of styles, rooted in pop-oriented experimental post-punk. With guitars in the spirit of Unwound and Hum, each strum chimed along to the cymbal-crushing drumming of Ahmed Gallab. Singer Zach Bussinger’s voice often shifted seamlessly from Ben Gibbard-style croons to Refused-esque screams of bloody murder, often leaving the veins in his neck on the verge of bursting open. The songs carried a clear pop sensibility, while relying on the interplay of dynamics between punk intensity and ambient flourishes. The band released two EP’s titled Four and Guitars are Science before splitting in 2005.

sweetheart

The story of Starcrossed, however, must be told alongside their “brother” band Sweetheart, who shared the drumming of Gallab. Kent natives who transfered to Columbus, OH, Sweetheart represented the same importance to the state’s capital that Starcrossed did to Kent. Sweetheart eschewed the more melodic and spacey aspects of Starcrossed and focused on straight-forward guitar based post-hardcore. Emphasizing Drive Like Jehu-like riffage, Sweetheart’s pummeling sound emphasized technical proficiency that rivaled any of the great math-rock bands from the early/mid 90’s. The songs ranged from two-minute rages to epic progressions that were built on interweaving guitars, sing/screamed vocals and pure power. The band released the EP Art Is Dead Is Dead on Perpetual Motion Machine in 2004 and completed a full-length album, however broke up in 2006 before it was ever released to the public.

Gallab has since moved on to play drums in some note-worthy bands including Caribou, Born Ruffians, Of Montreal and currently Yeasayer as well as his solo-vehicle Sinkane. As he continues to find new successes, the majority of people who hear his music in the future will undoubtedly miss out on these hidden treasures. And it sucks for them.

Band You Should Have Known: Boy Problems

posted by Bradley

in BYSHK

Boy Problems was an all too brief but memorable addition to the ever expanding catalog of amazing bands spawning from the Pennsylvania hardcore/emo scene.  Featuring former members of other bands you should have known — Harrison Bergeron, Make Me, and the much loved Street Smart Cyclist — Boy Problems played a uniquely potent blend of clean hooks and dual screamed vocals that was nothing short of jaw dropping.   They toured around with fellow Philadelphians and perennial SAL favorite Algernon Cadwallader in the summer of 2008, released a subsequent 5 song tour “demo”, and contributed 2 songs to a Boy Problems/Osceola/The Reptilian/Lautrec 4-way split effort.  Prolific: far from it.  Preeminent: bet your ass on it!

The guys from Boy Problems were recently nice enough to share their collective efforts, so you needn’t bother scrounging around.  The summer tour songs can be found here and their 2 songs off of the split with Osceola/The Reptilian/Lautrec (all of whom are bands you should know) are up for grabs here.  Sound wise, think along the lines of a more aggressive Algernon Cadwallader, or if you’re familiar, a softer side of Make Me.

If you care to follow, ex-Boy Problems members are now playing in Snowing, Storm The Bastille, Cassillis, and Book of Flags.

Band You Should Have Known: Volta Do Mar

posted by Will

in BYSHK

Chicago’s Volta Do Mar was one of the first mathy instrumental bands I truly fell for. Full of jazz and prog elements, VDM worked a healthy amount of melody into their intelligent compositions. While the band was clearly influenced by genre icons like Don Caballero and Tortoise, Volta Do Mar quickly made a name for themselves with their own striking personality and willingness to think outside the box instrumentally. I would suggest starting with Volta Do Mar’s fine full-length debut, At The Speed of Light or Day. Members of Volta do Mar now play in Oso and American Draft.

Band You Should Have Known: Miranda Sound

posted by Will

in BYSHK

Miranda Sound played their last show in August of 2008. It is a terrible shame listening to the band’s final album, 2008’s self-titled affair. This is power pop in a heavy Posies or Nada Surf vein but with an almost post-punk approach instrumentally. The band really reminds me of the younger crop of British bands like Dartz! and Tellison. Miranda Sound’s songs are driving and straight forward yet instrumentally a bit more diverse. The production is superb. I have got some digging to do in terms of the band’s back catalog cause this album has knocked me over. I even get a Jimmy Eat World feel at times. Believe me, Miranda Sound is a band you should seek out.

Band You Should Have Known: Team Stray

posted by Will

in BYSHK

For long time fans of pop/punk, Team Stray would have been one of those great bands that found themselves outcast on Honest Don’s. If you get that reference then god bless you. Sadly, Cincinnati, Ohio’s Team Stray recently called it quits. The band crosses power pop/punk with an almost indie/emo sound. Sicko crossed with The Smoking Popes? Hell, I don’t know. Team Stray’s Gender Studies album was one I meant to write about in ‘08 but never really got around to (yeah, I know…thanks a lot says band and label). Anyway, it really is a shame the band is hanging it up now. For fans of indie power pop, Team Stray were a dream band.

Band You Should Have Known: Handsome

posted by Will

in BYSHK

Lost in the major label shuffle of the 90’s were too many great bands. Handsome were definitely one of those casualties. The band sadly called it quits after just one album, 1997’s Self-Titled affair. The band included former Helmet guitarist Peter Mengede and ex-Quicksand guitarist Tom Capone. Not surprisingly, those two bands were great starting points for Handsome’s melodic mixture of metal and hardcore. Vocalist Jeremy Chatelain, who is better known with his later involvement in Jets To Brazil, was the band’s soothing influence. The riffs swirl around his vocals with remarkable precision. While definitely lesser known than heavyweights like Far or Quicksand, Handsome deserve to be mentioned in the same breath. Also check out Chatelain’s later alt-country vehicle, Cub Country, who put out two solid albums.

Band You Should Have Known: Elliott

posted by Will

in BYSHK

This is a “duh” BYSHK for me. After recently posting about former Elliott vocalist Chris Higdon’s new band, Frontier(s), I went back and gave some old Elliott records a spin. The band’s debut album, 1998’s U.S. Songs, is no doubt in my top ten albums of all time. It is amazing how much this band morphed in their brief history of only three studio albums. From the propulsive emo rock of U.S. Songs to the creative bombast of False Cathedrals to the atmospheric journey of their final release, 2003’s Song In The Air, Elliott refused to stand still.

Drummer Kevin Ratterman now plays in Wax Fang and vocalist Chris Higdon, as previously mentioned, fronts Frontier(s).

Band You Should Have Known: Hungry Pines

posted by Will

in BYSHK

This is just to provide you an example of how slow I am. I received the debut album, Golden You, from a cool band called Hungry Pines earlier this year. It’s been in my “Review Worthy!” pile for quite a while now. So, I sit down to write about the band recently and consequently discover they have already broken up. Man, I suck! Anyway, this band was good and had tons of promise. Great female vocals and a powerful band to back it up. Reminiscent of Denali and Vedera as well as lesser known bands that I have covered here (and who are still together): The Kindness Kind and Awake And Alert. But, if this is your style then make sure you pick up a copy of Hungry Pine’s debut (and unfortunate swan song as well), Golden You, before it is gone forever.

Band You Should Have Known: Gratitude

posted by Will

in BYSHK

I will never understand why Gratitude were not absolutely huge. Considering the band was rumored to have gotten a million dollar advance, you would think Atlantic would have actually chosen to promote them. What can you say? Major labels are dumb.

The band’s one and only record, 2005’s Self-Titled affair, was absolutely huge in every aspect: production, melodies and the incredibly indulgent vocals of Jonah Matranga (Far, Onelinedrawing, New End Original). Despite the cheese factor that comes into play at times, Gratitude succeeded in writing a simple and honest record. Obvious Jimmy Eat World influences abound but the band kept a remarkable distance from the trends otherwise. The band also included ex-Crumb (another great band!) guitarist Mark Weinberg, bassist Bob Lindsey, guitarist Jeremy Tappero, and drummer Dave Jarnstrom. Lindsey, Tappero and Jarnstrom are all in Attention now.
