I found out about Thinking Machines a while back from the always excellent site, Built On A Weak Spot. I never posted anything on them but I recently listened to the band’s 2008 album, A Complete Record of Urban Archaeology once again and just had to write something up. The band plays a melodic brand of mathy post-punk that fans of the DC sound should fall in love with rather easily. Did J. Robbins produce this (I don’t have a physical copy. Thanks eMusic)? It kind of has that slick yet powerful sound to it. If anybody remembers Actionslacks, I swear these vocals sound remarkably similar to that guy. And oddly enough I think Robbins produced an Actionslacks record. Anyway, back to Thinking Machines. The band was recording for their next album in late 2009 so hopefully we see something new in 2010.

I received Hunters, Run!’s EP2 in the mail recently and what a pleasant surprise it has been. The band has been around for a few years but has flown under my radar somehow. Imagine Ted Leo or Elvis Costello fronting Husker Du or some ridiculously awesome combination like that. You can also throw in some new wave influences as well ala Talking Heads perhaps. The band is in the process of releasing four EPs as limited 7-inches which showcase their new songs and artwork of up & coming artists. I downloaded EP1 recently and it lives up to the glory of EP2. I will be diving into the rest of the band’s back catalog as soon as possible and am looking forward to EP3 and EP4 upcoming. This is great stuff that manages to stick out out as unique yet never “hip” if you know what I mean. You can buy Hunters, Run music here.

Can we put a moratorium on bands taking their names from Morrissey and/or Smiths song titles? Apparently not but I guess it could be a lot worse. Certain People I Know is the new band from Braid/Hey Mercedes fellas Bob Nanna and Damon Atkinson. The band is definitely borrowing more from Hey Mercedes’ pop chops, but CPIK adds in the element of female vocals as well. I am kind of shocked that this band hasn’t been more talked about considering the similarities to Hey Mercedes. Either way, I can appreciate those similarities and the subtle differences as well. You can download the band’s demo right here.

I was reminded of Anthem In on my recent vacation when they came on the Ipod shuffle a couple of times. I remembered that I never even covered the band’s 2008 self-titled debut here at SAL. That’s a shame cause for fans of poppy indie rock ala The Jealous Sound, Anthem In are a crown jewel. The band has just released a new EP, entitled Cloudbusting which continues the band’s melodically-inclined songwriting prowess. Below is the band’s video for the song “Down” off their self-titled debut.

I have no problem calling Death Becomes Even The Maiden the hippest band in town. Hell, these guys probably have shit in their music collection you have only remotely heard of. I reviewed the band’s Arrangement EP before but I had failed on numerous occasions to get out and see the band live in a long time. But that changed last weekend when I was able to catch the band at the infamous Art Bar in the heart of downtown Columbia. I was left with a new found appreciation for what this trio are creating. The range of the band has increased dramatically. Granted this is still post-punk at its core but with an increasingly ambitious and evolving agenda. Elements of new wave and grungy post-hardcore are added to complete an almost combustible mixture. You can hear it in Eric Greenwood’s tense basslines and raw screams, in Heyward Sims incredibly imaginative guitar work and in Chris Powell’s propulsive drumming. Equal parts frantic and hypnotic, Death Becomes Even The Maiden allow all of those competing dynamics to rise to the surface and become their greatest strength.

I waited far too long to pick up The Evening Rig’s 2007 debut, Never Been’er. The Evening Rig are made up of members of the criminally underrated pop-punk band The Crush, as well as an ex-member of Cadillac Blindside and The Cardinal Sin. The band are triumphantly Minneapolis echoing the ghosts of the city’s classic bands. There’s also a little Old 97’s thrown in here but let’s be honest, Never Been’er seems stacked with Replacements influence. Singer/guitarist Jason Miller’s passionate vocal cry remains intact for The Evening Rig much the same as it did for The Crush. Still sounding like Blake Schwarzenbach (if you don’t know who that is you need to show yourself the door) at times, Miller also recalls another familiar front man. Perhaps it is just the change in musical scenery cause I never noticed it before but Miller’s vocals resemble Paul Westerberg (of The Replacements of course) a great deal especially on the slower paced tracks. The Evening Rig eschew much of the pop-punk of their past instead focusing on a more rustic take on Americana-laced rock and roll. Hell, with The Evening Rig around maybe we don’t need that Mats reunion so badly afterall.

French band Daitro are one of the better European emo/screamo bands going today. “De l’eau Coule Sous les Ponts” is off the band’s most recent release, 2007’s split LP with Sed Non Satiata. The band is recording for a split with Daniel Striped Tiger upcoming in 09.

This one has been sitting in the draft folder for a few weeks…I guess I waited too long cause everybody will know this band now that they have signed to Fat Wreck Chords. But I’m not one to let a post go to waste. Teenage Bottlerocket have been around for a few years now with barely a sniff from SAL. That is my bad indeed. In the last few months I have fallen hard for the band’s 2008 album, Warning Device. I was stunned at how much better the band sounded than what I remember from my initial listens a few years ago. Sometimes it just takes a few albums for a band to hit their stride. With their third album, Teenage Bottlerocket has improved leaps and bounds and Warning Device is the proof in the pudding. For fans of pop/punk, Screeching Weasel and Lookout Records but with a definite modern feel.
Crawling Back To You

Ghost Town Trio are an awesome Ohio band that plays a brand of anthemic and upbeat punk rock. There is a definite mod punk feel to the band’s songs which is kind of refreshing to hear these days. You can tell these guys influences go way back. It took me a few listens to warm up to their Have You Heard? EP but now I simply can’t stop. This is heart-on-sleeve soulful punk rock at its finest. Lead singer Andy Cook has some great pipes and that gives the band an incredibly full sound. Cook also has solo stuff which is quite good as well. You can check that out here. The Have You Heard? EP was released on the equally sweet Team Science Records.
Cold Machine

Bob Nanna and Damon Atkinson of Braid/Hey Mercedes have formed Certain People I Know. The band’s name comes from a Morrissey song title (I assume at least). Certain People I Know is playing their first show on February 19th at the Beat Kitchen in Chicago, IL. While the band has not released any songs just yet, there is little doubt that this will be a band you should know.

I just discovered Alcest’s 2007 album, Souvenirs d’Un Autre Monde, a few months ago and the album kills me every time. There has always been a somewhat informal link between metal and shoegaze. You have seen it with Justin Broaderick’s metamorphisis from Napalm Death and Godflesh into the warmer melodic depths of Jesu. French metal multi-instrumentalist Neige follows the same path with Alcest. You can call it post-metal if you want. Either way, it’s huge sounding and fans of Mogwai, Sigur Ros and My Bloody Valentine should take note as well. Souvenirs d’Un Autre Monde is a six song, forty minute journey into epic guitar bliss. Absolutely gorgeous.

Just when I feel myself reaching that point where everything is beginning to sound a bit stale, a band like Native comes along and knocks me out. There is definitely nothing boring or generic about this Indiana band. They play a powerful blend of screamy, mathy hardcore that leaves other like-minded bands in the dust. Native’s last release, We Delete; Erase EP, brims with a youthful energy that is nearly impossible to duplicate. The band certainly has an individuality all their own. The instruments run circles around each other but all with a beautiful purpose. Native are destined for something. The hell if I know what just yet. But I know I want to be a part of it!
Alpacastan

Chris Higdon, former vocalist of the great Elliott, has a new band called Frontier(s). This is his first band since Elliott broke up four or five years ago. There are four rough mixes of songs up on the band’s myspace that show a huge amount of promise. Elliott fans should find some solace in Higdon’s familiar vocals but there are some noticeable differences in approach from his previous band. These songs are more than enough to get the intrigue and anticipation for the band’s debut flowing.

Taken from Auxes‘ myspace page here: “Started as Dave’s post-move-to-NC, for some reason leave all the people you love to play music with in Chicago, solo recording project, Auxes has now turned into a six piece with two drummers. Luckily we’re still able to bribe Noah to travel down from Chicago to play with his expatriated yet homeland-returned friends, errr, friend rather. All the involved play in other bands: Dave (Milemarker, Challenger, Summer Sorcerer), Noah (Milemarker, Challenger, Head of Skulls), Pete (Challenger, Summer Sorcerer), Mike (Fin Fang Foom), John (Caltrop, Hazerai), Ben (Ben Davis Band, Milemarker, Bats and Mice). I probably missed a few bands in there… Welcome to NC. We all share down here.”
- These songs are great! With a line-up like this though, I guess it should be no surprise. Stoked on hearing the whole album which comes out on Lovitt Records in October.

Wading through countless Myspace friend requests is a daunting and tedious task at times. But, Picture Books In Winter is why I do it. The Cardiff, UK band swirls the sounds of Dischord/D.C. ala Q And Not U with the more nuanced side of McLusky and a helping of indie pop akin to Pomegranates. Add strings to the mixture and you have a remarkable and compelling finished product. The band only has a five song demo to their credit but it is more than impressive. You can download the band’s demo on the cheap from Amie Street. Hop on before it gets too crowded.
