Brainworms II: Swear To Me

posted by Will

in Music Reviews

I have covered Brainworms on three separate occasions here at SAL but it’s always been for split 7-inches. This is my first chance to cover the band in the long player format and I must say Brainworms are probably better off in smaller doses, at least for this particular listener. The band’s maniacal spazz punk is endearing but at close to 30 minutes it begins to grate on the nerves a bit. I will say that things seem all the more refined on Swear To Me. Could it be that Brainworms are maturing? Look no further for a song like “Which Words” to prove that theory with its mid-tempo pace and toned down vocal delivery. Or the spoken (shouted) word approach on “Whatever, That’s How You Get Famous” which is reminiscent of Lifter Puller crossed with Les Savy Fav. Brainworms seem stuck trying to find some sort of middle ground and because of that Swear To Me is good but never quite crosses over to being great.

Indie/emo heart throbs Monument have decided to interview themselves for SAL’s Sound Off feature. These guys are really long-winded and name drop a lot of bands. It sucked doing the Tags for this post. Warning: this is the longest interview ever in the history of band interviews…but oh so entertaining! You can check out my review of the band’s most recent release, a 3 song 7-inch here. Monujamz!!

Brainworms/Tubers: Split 7″

posted by Will

in Music Reviews, Vinyl Corner

Brainworms seem to be the kings of split 7 inches as this is the band’s third in the span of a year now. This time the Richmond band teams up with St, Augustine, Florida’s Tubers. Brainworms let loose two tracks here. “Jays Big Date” is trademark Brainworms and sees the debut of Josh Small on guitar with the band. Probably best known as Tim Barry’s touring guitarist, Small’s inventive playing can only enhance Brainworms’ crazed punk rock nuggets. The second track is a surprisingly straight-ahead live cover of Rites of Spring’s “For Want Of” which of course is a classic. For a live recording it sounds pretty amazing.

Next up we have Tubers who are able to fit in four short ditties on their side. Members of Tubers have done time in notable Florida bands like Twelve Hour Turn (an amazing band!), Solid Pony, and Environmental Youth Crunch. While not as spastic as some of their past bands, Tubers still find aggression in a more straight forward approach. But, screamy vocals still appear and add a cool dimension to the band’s solid backbone. This is my first real introduction to the band and I am impressed. Tubers finish it off with a great old school Lemonheads cover of “Glad I Don’t Know” from the band’s album, Lick.

And the Brainworms awesome split seven inch streak continues.

Brainworms/Dynamite Arrows: Split 7″

posted by Will

in Music Reviews, Vinyl Corner

Yet another red hot Brainworms split 7-inch. This one adds a little more variety as melodic pop/punkers Dynamite Arrows occupy the other side. I am loving what Dynamite Arrows are shelling out. I can not really think of a comparison which is pretty amazing considering how much pop punk seemingly recycles the same shit over and over. Catchy but with plenty of balls to back it up. No gruffness here, the band has more of the smooth vocal styling. These two songs are great and I’ll be picking up the band’s newest 7″ very soon.

The Brainworms songs here have a bit more immediacy than the two on the band’s split with The Catalyst. Especially lead track, “Not Heavy Just Awkward”, which shows off the lead singer’s crazy range and delivery. “Biggy, Shorty, Fatty and Friends” continues along the same path and might be the band’s catchiest song yet. Lyrically, the song is a fucking riot as the tongue and cheek rant about scene stereotypes is enough to make even the most jaded veterans crack a smile. With the closing lyric of How many men does it take to screw in a light bulb? One, if he’s not a fucking moron!, how could you not love this band? Ah, Brainworms, winning the scene over, one cynical asshole at a time.

The Catalyst/Brainworms: Split 7″

posted by Will

in Music Reviews, Vinyl Corner

This is my first introduction to Richmond, VA’s Brainworms after hearing many accolades rained down upon the band. I must say that while I am not floored by what I hear,  I can certainly understand what the fuss is about. It is refreshing to hear a band that seems to be following no trends or genres whatsoever. Brainworms plays arty punk/emo/hardcore that lacks the pretension one might expect. The vocals are screamy and the lyrics are hard to decipher. Really, this should be a trainwreck. However, the band adds a touch of melody here and there that give the songs more character. It results in some damn catchy punk rock tunes.

The Catalyst I have heard before and their sound continues to be as filthy and raw as I remember. The first  two songs here are noticeably more raging if that is even possible. Much like their last record, The Catalyst throw in a fantastic instrumental number that sounds completely out of place. Perhaps that is the band’s purpose but “Song Without Words” provides a brilliant ending to a split that barrels the listener right over.
