Vinyl Corner: Wormburner

Self-Titled Black 7″

Hailing from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Wormburner (wārm·bō’ner?) features members of North Lincoln and Traffic & Weather amongst others. Those bands provide a pretty good starting point for what to expect from Wormburner. I guessed gruff pop/punk and for the most part that is what you get on the band’s debut release. That’s not to downplay the band because they play this style of rough and rustic pop/punk really well. It instantly brings to mind the sadly defunct Get Bent. Lyrically, the themes are very reminiscent of Latterman, another sadly defunct band. It is all about accepting change, making sense of your life and pushing through the negativity to see things in a more positive light. The songs, while solid, take a few listens to make their mark. The hooks are subtle but the more spins you give this piece of wax the more you will appreciate it. The band is currently writing for a LP release and I am eager to hear what they do next.

Quick Hit: Down In The Dumps

posted by Will

in Quick Hits

With vocals that give “gruff” a whole new meaning, the recently defunct Down In The Dumps punish their way through a bunch of punk rock tunes. Hey this ain’t the most original shit so let’s not pretend that Down In The Dumps are doing something never done before. But this is some good crusty pop/punk (Crimpshrine) that brings to mind the stuff that was coming out of the East Bay way back in the Lookout days. You will notice how catchy these songs get on your third or fourth listen. The guys went on to play in Jonesin’, Get Bent, Basement Black. Dumps Luck was released on Dead Broke Rekerds.

Band Spotlight: Thousandaires

in Band Spotlight

Who? Thousandaires

Where are they from? Brooklyn, NY

What do they sound like? Members of Bridge And Tunnel, Get Bent and Halo Fauna get together to form yet another band. Do these guys ever quit? The three aforementioned bands should give you a pretty good idea of the awesomeness contained within the band’s first three songs. The band (Jared from Get Bent, Jeff from Bridge And Tunnel and Dave/Dom from Halo Fauna) just played their first show and are currently writing and recording. In the meantime, you can download Thousandaires’ Land Seal Demo over at If You Make It right now.

in Year End Lists

What a fantastic year for EPs, demos and seven-inchers! Click on album artwork for more.

#20 – Architect Sketch “Communication In Cases For Which No Other Form Is Applicable” (Self-Released)

- Muscular and mathy indie rock that is melodic and abrasive at the same time.

#19 – Tin Kitchen “Demo” (Self-Released)

- Sadly, the only three songs by this short lived band. Rainer Maria anyone?

#18 – Paper The Operator “Solemn Boyz” (Viper Bite)

- Power pop rock to the max. Fans of Jimmy Eat World should take notice.

#17 – Title Fight “Kingston” 7″ (Flight Plan)

- A dynamic first three songs from this young band channeling the ghosts of Lifetime and early Saves The Day.

#16 – Empire Empire (I Was A Lonely Estate) “Year Of The Rabbit” 7″ (Count Your Lucky Stars/Strictly No Capital Letters)

- The Emo revival is upon us. Empire Empire’s upcoming debut LP is slated for spring 09. Mineral, watch your ass!

#15 – Scream Hello “Smart & Stupid” (Red Leader)

- This EP perfectly showcases the range of Scream Hello. Perhaps better than the band’s LP which followed months later.

#14 – Get Bent “Demo” (Self-Released)

- Gruff and rustic pop/punk that promises a ton for the band’s future.

#13 – Young Hearts “Demo” (Self-Released)

- Former Dear Tonight members jump into pop punk waters and hit soaring heights!

#12 – Each Other’s Mothers “Demo” (Parrot On A Porch)

- Instrumental goodness. These gals can flat out play. Unfortunately, the band seems to have called it a day.

#11 – Know Think “Demo” (Self-Released)

- Emo loveliness akin to Look Mexico and Aloha.

The State Lottery: Cities We’re Not From LP

[Best New Music]

Cities We’re Not From is the debut album from The State Lottery. The band is based out of Detroit and Queens with members of The Gibbons, Dynamite Arrows and Get Bent. As the opening chords of the title track ring out to start the record, you can feel something special in the air. Cities We’re Not From has a lot to do with growing up, growing older, moving around and subsequently moving on.

The title track explores moving from city to city only to realize we can not run from what inherently makes us unhappy. We live in cities we’re not from/Make our beds in neighborhoods that we barely belong/Searching for some sort of community/And it seems alright, but I can’t deny that I’m still so lonely. “Kindgarten Class” is simple in its outright questioning of America’s pursuit of war: We’ve declared endless war armed with the infantile concept of good vs. bad. “Night Of The Johnstown Flood” is straightforward and biting in its lyrical approach. And the America enshrined in my parents’ hearts and minds is a language I don’t speak, no it means nothing to me. It is an unfortunate sentiment of many in our generation whether we want to admit it or not. Cities We’re Not From explores so much of the (American) human condition but at its heart, the album is a restless search and desperate hope to find and build a community for survival.

Cities We’re Not From sounds like such a natural progression from guys who have spent their lives in punk bands. This is punk rock but done so with sense of maturity and humility for all who have passed before. Cities We’re Not From is angry and political, yet eternally hopeful; powerful and aggressive, yet keenly melodic. The instrumental additions of keys, horns and harmonica add a fresh dynamic to the traditional punk band setting. With Cities We’re Not From, The State Lottery have delivered one of best albums of the year. These eight songs are a moving testament to the heart and soul of punk rock. Sing these tired songs. You’re gonna miss ‘em when they’re gone. Indeed.

Among the countless reasons to go to If You Make It, you can now download awesome free albums here. I STRONGLY recommend that you download The State Lottery’s Cities We’re Not From record which I will have a review up for soon. And of course, you can buy the vinyl LP from Salinas. Seriously, this is one of my favorite records of the year.

Also at the link above, you can pick up two new super groups and their debut EPs: Thousandaires (members of Bridge & Tunnel, Get Bent, Halo Fauna) and Iron Chic (members of Latterman, Small Arms Dealer, Agent, Suicide Fix). God, how incestuous these boys are!

Get Bent: Demo

I guess I should pay more attention to stuff I get in the mail. Get Bent sat on my desk for at least a week without a single glance or listen. That is until I turned the demo over and saw that it was recorded by Latterman’s Phil Douglas. So, I quickly popped the CD into my computer and voila, instant awesomeness! Owing a debt to Douglas’ former band, Get Bent pound out five songs of anthemic pop/punk rock. Melodic, gruff and oozing with sincerity, Get Bent exercise a more rustic take on pop/punk. “City” brings to mind the authentic quality that a band like The Gaslight Anthem have. As is the case with most of Douglas’ recordings, he stays out of the way and lets the band shine through with their own style. Get Bent may not have hit a home run on their demo, but they got a double off the top of the wall. And sometimes, that’s all it takes to win the game (sorry, it’s baseball season, I couldn’t help myself).

(You can order this demo for $2 in the U.S. to cover shipping. Hit the band’s myspace up.)

Band Dump

posted by Will

in Band Dump, Music

Band Dump is just another excuse for me to make yet another list.

A Great Big Pile Of Leaves – Somebody sent me a link to these guys recently. The vocals get close to that annoying emo whine at times but always recover pretty well. I really like this. You can download the band’s EP, The Fiery Works, for free here.

Get Bent – I got this band’s demo in the mail earlier in the week and the name threw me off. It sat for a few days til I turned it over and realized Phil from Latterman recorded it. Doh! Awesome pop/punk rock stuff! You can get this demo for $2 (to cover shipping) from the band.

Six Gallery – Found a few songs by this band online recently and was very impressed. Cool instrumental stuff that I need to get my hands on more of.

Little Brazil – I remember listening to this band a few years ago and being unimpressed. But, their late 2007 full length, Tighten The Noose, is a nice step. I don’t remember such a strong Smoking Popes influence but I certainly like it.

The Wading Girl – I first heard of The Wading Girl at a Tim Barry show. They were his backing band and did a fine job. I figured if they were good enough for him than I needed to give a listen. That was over a year ago…yeah, I might be slow but I’m persistent. Anyway, I finally got the band’s 2007 release, The Miriam Demos. It’s like Jenny Lewis joined the Avett Brothers? Sure.
