Who? The Holy Mess

Where are they from? Philadelphia, PA

What do they sound like? Snotty pop/punk that reminds one of the best the genre has to offer. We are talking cream of the crop type stuff here. For fans of The Lawrence Arms or Smoke Or Fire you need this…NOW!

You can download the band’s EP Dismount from If You Make It. The Holy Mess will be releasing their next 7″ on the illustrious Evil Weevil.

Heads Up! Tiny Engines To Release Everyone Everywhere LP

posted by Will

in Heads Up

If you didn’t know Tiny Engines is a label I started with two other guys in 2008. This will be our third release overall. 2010 will be much busier for us than our first two years. We’ve got 2 or 3 more releases coming this year!

TINY ENGINES To Release EVERYONE EVERYWHERE LP
——————————————————-

* Pre-order Self-Titled 12″ (out 05/04/10)
* Band now streaming two brand new songs
* Download 2009 debut 7″ for FREE @ If You Make It

——————————————————-

Tiny Engines is pleased to announce that it will release the Self-Titled debut full-length from Philadelphia’s Everyone Everywhere.

The album, which will be released in vinyl and digital formats on May 04, 2010, is now up for pre-order from the label. Tiny Engines will press 500 12-inches on maroon and off-white colorways (350 / 150). To secure a copy of this amazing record, go here.

The band is currently streaming two brand new songs, “Tiny Boat” and “Blown Up Grown Up,” on its Myspace page.

Everyone Everywhere’s eponymous debut builds on the rock-solid foundation laid down on last year’s dynamic 7″, A Lot Of Weird People Standing Around, and further pushes the band’s sonic palette in exciting new directions at every turn. Sure, those lovely Promise Ring vibes remain – not to mention hints of Braid’s twisting-yet-tuneful angularity, the crackling anti-anthems of indie heroes Superchunk and Piebald’s off-kilter sense of melody – but the Philly four piece has honed its songwriting chops, dialed in its amps and seriously upped the ante with this emotionally taut ten-song affair.

On a related note, Everyone Everywhere and Evil Weevil Records, the label responsible for the 7″ version of A Lot Of Weird People Standing Around, have teamed up with the awesome folks at If You Make It to give away a digital copy of the 4-song effort. To download this sweet little release, completely free from financial obligation, go here.

For Serious This Time: When You’re In It

posted by Will

in Music Reviews

I got this new For Serious This Time disc in the mail only a few days after I downloaded the album off of If You Make It. So, I figured it was a sign that I should jump right in and review this sucker. Especially considering I let the band’s last submission to SAL languish on my desk for months before discovering the goodness within. Not a lot has changed here, For Serious This Time are still doing the whole jangly emo thing remarkably well. This set of songs does cut back on the twinkly emo vibe a bit and just seems more straight forward and refined to me. All the while the band keeps the loose house show feel of their previous release and scores yet another winner.

Band Spotlight: Sundials

Who? Sundials

Where are they from? Richmond, VA

What do they sound like? Power pop/punk goodness! Man, these guys remind me of someone and I just can not put my finger on it exactly. I’ve been racking my brain and going through old CDs but to no avail. Oh well, I will figure it out eventually and all you need to know is that this is great stuff either way. I could tell by the band’s influences that I was gonna love them…”The Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr, Jawbreaker, The Weakerthans, Husker Du…”, I mean, c’mon!

If you dig modern stuff like Cheap Girls, Failures’ Union or Tin Armor you can add Sundials to your list of favorites.

The band’s first six songs are available for free download from If You Make It. And of those six, the first three songs will be released as a 7″ on Impermanent Records which I will definitely be purchasing!

Best New Music: Kudrow

posted by Will

in Best New Music, Music Reviews

Dave didn’t send me the Lando vinyl so Kudrow don’t get a vinyl corner review…they just get a regular review. How boring! If you didn’t already know this Brooklyn “supergroup” consists of Jeff Rosenstock from Bomb the Music Industry! on guitar and vocals, Mike Campbell (The Brass, Latterman) on bass, and drummer Dave Garwacke of a thousand different bands (Thousandaires, Halo Fauna, etc.) and If You Make It of course.

This release kind of caught me off guard. It wasn’t really what I was expecting but that was for the best cause if I had to hear one more goddamn post-hardcore band I might just slit my wrist. Kudrow’s Lando is punk but not really…it’s what’s left over from the remnants. It’s catchy but it certainly ain’t pop. It’s noisy indie rock but with melody, humor and tongue firmly planted in cheek. In other words it is pretty damn great and probably meant for guys just like me. Aging punk rockers unite!?

You can download the songs from Quote Unquote or If You Make It and the vinyl is available from…

Not sure why I never covered Slingshot Dakota’s Demo #3 which came out last summer and is still available for download on IYMI. It rules much like everything else Slingshot has done. And they cover Fugazi’s “Waiting Room”…badass. So, ready for a new album!

I saw Hop Along (formerly Hop Along, Queen Ansleis) for the first time last night and they were awesome. Check them out on the road if you get the chance. Here’s a video for their song “Second Name” courtesy of  If You Make It. The song is on the band’s new 10-inch, Wretches, out on Salinas Records. I should have a review coming soon!

Band Spotlight: Snowing

in Band Spotlight

Who? Snowing

Where are they from? Lehigh Valley, PA

What do they sound like? Members of Street Smart Cyclist and Boy Problems come together to form something that sounds pretty close to something you would expect. And I say that in the most positive sense. This is loud, aggressive emo/hardcore that shows off some mathy instrumental interplay. The vocals are great and can go to incredibly harsh at the flip of a coin. Frankly it adds something to the band that distinguishes them from the hordes that seem to be flocking to this style over the last few years. Very promising stuff. Check it out for yourself…go download the four song demo at If You Make It.

Who? Thousandaires

Where are they from? Brooklyn, NY

What do they sound like? Members of Bridge And Tunnel, Get Bent and Halo Fauna get together to form yet another band. Do these guys ever quit? The three aforementioned bands should give you a pretty good idea of the awesomeness contained within the band’s first three songs. The band (Jared from Get Bent, Jeff from Bridge And Tunnel and Dave/Dom from Halo Fauna) just played their first show and are currently writing and recording. In the meantime, you can download Thousandaires’ Land Seal Demo over at If You Make It right now.

Look Mexico Pink Couch Video

posted by Will

in Music Video
- If You Make It filmed a bunch of on-the-scene “pink” couch sessions from The Fest in Gainesville this past year. Luckily the boys in Look Mexico got their chance to perform “You Ever Get Punched In the Face for Talking Too Much?” from the band’s amazing full-length, This Is Animal Music. You can still purchase Look Mexico’s brand new Gasp Asp 7-inch from Tiny Engines. Cough cough.

Among the countless reasons to go to If You Make It, you can now download awesome free albums here. I STRONGLY recommend that you download The State Lottery’s Cities We’re Not From record which I will have a review up for soon. And of course, you can buy the vinyl LP from Salinas. Seriously, this is one of my favorite records of the year.

Also at the link above, you can pick up two new super groups and their debut EPs: Thousandaires (members of Bridge & Tunnel, Get Bent, Halo Fauna) and Iron Chic (members of Latterman, Small Arms Dealer, Agent, Suicide Fix). God, how incestuous these boys are!
