Band Spotlight: Fierce Brosnan

Who? Fierce Brosnan

Where are they from? New Jersey

What do they sound like? Former and current members of Static Radio, Let Me Run and Yo Man Go. Fierce Brosnan probably falls more in line with Yo Man Go than the other two. I can hear traces of early Hot Water Music, Latterman and even Alkaline Trio. The songs are rough and that adds to the band’s charm. The band’s Basement Demo is up for free download at Death To False Hope Records. This is a band more people should be talking about and a full-length is said to be in the works.

Best New Music: Kudrow

Dave didn’t send me the Lando vinyl so Kudrow don’t get a vinyl corner review…they just get a regular review. How boring! If you didn’t already know this Brooklyn “supergroup” consists of Jeff Rosenstock from Bomb the Music Industry! on guitar and vocals, Mike Campbell (The Brass, Latterman) on bass, and drummer Dave Garwacke of a thousand different bands (Thousandaires, Halo Fauna, etc.) and If You Make It of course.

This release kind of caught me off guard. It wasn’t really what I was expecting but that was for the best cause if I had to hear one more goddamn post-hardcore band I might just slit my wrist. Kudrow’s Lando is punk but not really…it’s what’s left over from the remnants. It’s catchy but it certainly ain’t pop. It’s noisy indie rock but with melody, humor and tongue firmly planted in cheek. In other words it is pretty damn great and probably meant for guys just like me. Aging punk rockers unite!?

You can download the songs from Quote Unquote or If You Make It and the vinyl is available from…

Who? Timeshares

Where are they from? Downstate, NY

What do they sound like? Timeshares occupy the Yo Man Go/Latterman branch of bands. This is catchy pop punk that really sticks with you from the outset. The band’s three song demo is available for free download over at If You Make It. Or you can get a physical copy straight from the band. I know this style is done to death but these guys got it right with just the perfect amount of pop power!

Desert City Soundtrack “Funeral Car” (Deep Elm – 2003)

dcs

The name of the album, Funeral Car, says it all. Desert City Soundtrack never got the press they deserved. And if you missed seeing this band’s incredible live show you missed out on sheer madness.

Jimmy Eat World “Futures” (Interscope – 2004)

jewfutures

Sandwiched between Jimmy Eat World’’s two most accessible albums, Futures was a darker look into the band’s songwriting. To me it seems like this album was the most uncomfortable one for the band to make and perhaps that is why it harbors such intriguing results.

Pedro The Lion “Control” (Jade Tree – 2002)

pedrothelion

David Bazan may be a lot of things but he doesn’t stray far when it comes to subject matter. And Control is his most brutally honest look into religion and the struggles that come with it. This is Bazan’s crowning achievement in my opinion.

Sun Kil Moon “April” (Caldo Verde – 2008)

sunkilmoon2

I can not express how much I love this man and  April is the best album of Mark Kozelek’s career. That spans all his solo material and of course the amazing Red House Painters catalog. I know it is a ridiculously strong statement but I’m sticking to it.

The Casket Lottery “Survival Is For Cowards” (Second Nature – 2002)

casketlottery

Survival Is For Cowards (still one of my all time favorite album titles) was the swan song of the underrated emo band The Casket Lottery. The album was the band’s most polished and mature release which made the group’s demise all the more puzzling.

The Forms  “The Forms” (Threespheres – 2007)

forms1

Recorded by Steve Albini for over 50 consecutive days, this self-titled affair is a testament to The Form’s determination and perseverance for perfection. I think they got it right.

The Gaslight Anthem “Sink Or Swim” (XO – 2007)

gaslightanthem

Anthemic pop/punk filtered through influences like Guthrie, Bragg and Springsteen. Sink Or Swim was The Gaslight Anthem’s amazing debut and quickly thrust the band into a spotlight they most definitely deserved.

Minus The Bear “Highly Refined Pirates” (Suicide Squeeze – 2002)

minusthebear1

I love this album. It’s the perfect late night summer album especially if you spent your time around the water a lot which I certainly did back then. And it is still the Minus The Bear album I reach for the most. But, I will admit that I have a love/hate relationship with the band for two reasons. First, I’ve seen them live twice. Once they were simply amazing. The next time they were absolutely terrible. Second, I think the band (through no fault of their own) has inspired a ton of shitty unoriginal bands. But hey, give them their due, this album still rules!

Latterman “No Matter Where We Go” (Deep Elm – 2005)

latterman

I can remember hearing the demos for No Matter Where We Go and being absolutely floored. Posi pop/punk hardcore anthems that many may try to replicate but they just fail miserably. Latterman just had that special something that we all look for in a band. RIP.

Tim Barry “Rivanna Junction” (Suburban Home – 2006)

timbarry1

This album makes the list, if for nothing else, the sheer amount I listened to it. But of course, that’s not all. Barry’s live show is an experience all should have. Rivanna Junction was the Avail frontman’s debut solo album and shows a side to Barry that has never really been seen before. This is not polished music. It’s dirty and imperfect…much like Avail was. This is a brutally honest album from a brutally honest man.

Vinyl Corner: Above Them & The Amistad

Split Blue Vinyl 7″

aboveamistad

The vinyl keeps flowing here at SAL. Here’s another split this time between two UK bands. The Amistad take on Side A and the band play that gruff  brand of pop/punk. I covered the band last year and not much has changed. But that’s a good thing. Granted this style has been done to death so it’s difficult to make a lasting impression. But, The Amistad do it as well as anybody else these days and still bring to mind bands like Dillinger Four and Latterman. You can’t ask for much more than that.

On the B Side we have Above Them who I covered briefly in the past. Above Them show a bit more diversity. You can tell these guys are coming from indie/punk background but they don’t let that hinder their songwriting in the least bit. These two songs sound a bit less emo(tional) in their tone than past stuff I’ve heard. Both songs are great and seem more rooted in rustic type punk rock even sounding like The Gaslight Anthem a bit. The band has an interesting and rather large palette that they are working with and I’m curious to hear what’s next.

All in all…a winner of a 7″ if you ask me!

Hailing from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Wormburner (wārm·bō’ner?) features members of North Lincoln and Traffic & Weather amongst others. Those bands provide a pretty good starting point for what to expect from Wormburner. I guessed gruff pop/punk and for the most part that is what you get on the band’s debut release. That’s not to downplay the band because they play this style of rough and rustic pop/punk really well. It instantly brings to mind the sadly defunct Get Bent. Lyrically, the themes are very reminiscent of Latterman, another sadly defunct band. It is all about accepting change, making sense of your life and pushing through the negativity to see things in a more positive light. The songs, while solid, take a few listens to make their mark. The hooks are subtle but the more spins you give this piece of wax the more you will appreciate it. The band is currently writing for a LP release and I am eager to hear what they do next.

My Heart To Joy: Seasons In Verse

Some bands are just not meant to be caged in. If you follow the trajectory of My Heart To Joy’s output, the band’s full-length debut, Seasons In Verse, might come as a surprise at first. But, when studied closer it is in fact the logical culmination of a burning that has noticeably been building up from the band’s core.

The instrumental first song, “Time Spent Breathing” reminds one of the lushness of Trail Of Dead rather than the melodic and screamy hardcore of the band’s past. And really that is a great comparison for My Heart To Joy (formerly My Heart To Joy At The Same Tone). The collision of art, indie and punk rock is quite similar to Trail Of Dead’s earlier material. Thankfully though, My Heart To Joy leave the pretension at the door. The band follows up the opener with the impassioned “Empty Homes” which leads into the album’s mid-paced mid-section. Songs like “Seasons In Verse”, “Worn Out Weather” and “Giving My Hands Away” may not be as in your face but they never lack the power and depth of the band’s more raging material either. “Old Capitals” is the collison of all facets of the band’s songwriting and is breathtaking in its delivery. My Heart To Joy even cover a Guided By Voices song, (ironically also covered by Trail Of Dead), “Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory”, with great success as they take the inner beauty of the song and turn it upside down with a healthy dose of vitriol.

When I reviewed the band’s seven-inch in January my RIYL was Hot Water Music, Small Brown Bike and Latterman…certainly good company to keep. But, with Seasons In Verse, My Heart To Joy have moved beyond those influences into more ambitious waters. The challenge with growth is to somehow maintain the signature quality of your songwriting. Even though the band has pushed their creativity into interesting new realms they have still managed to retain the raw and powerful nature of their earlier material. Seasons In Verse is proof of the dynamic and diverse heart that My Heart To Joy possess.

Who? Grown Ups

Where are they from? Michigan City, Indiana

What do they sound like? Imagine a rougher, more noodly Lifetime and you have got Grown Ups. Residing somewhere between emo and pop punk, Grown Ups offer up one of the best things I have heard in 09. Forming from members of Lions Of The North, Grown Ups bring to minds bands like Braid, Latterman and a lot of Street Smart Cyclist. There is an energy that emanates from the band’s songs that is infectious to say the least. Raw, yet ridiculously catchy, Grown Ups are absolutely perfect for the incoming warmer weather.

You can order these fine looking suckers from Kid Sister which has a lot of sweet, handmade stuff from a bunch of rad bands.

O Pioneers!!!/The Anchor: Split 7″

posted by Will

in Music Reviews, Vinyl Corner

O Pioneers!!! just keep soldiering on with new release after new release. Here the Houston band teams up with fellow Texans, The Anchor for a nice little slab of split vinyl. I am going to start on the B side just cause I can. The Anchor  hail from Austin, TX and play gruff but melodic punk rock. There is a definite Hot Water Music slant to the band’s music. The Anchor’s two songs, “This is For My Friends” and “Truant Tensions”, show a great deal of promise. While certainly not the most memorable or original, I am interested to hear the band’s next steps.

Now to the winning A Side. Fast out of the gates is the one O Pioneers!!! track, “Summers In Necro Norway With Ryan”. O Pioneers!!! are never short on passion and this song is certainly no different. It is flat out raging and the lyrics are as biting as ever. The song is about who we are and how we spend our lives talking and idolizing others instead of taking the necessary steps in our own lives. Yet another winner of a song from a band that just keeps getting better and better. All in all, a solid split worthy of your time.

Bridge And Tunnel: East/West

posted by Will

in Music Reviews

Bridge And Tunnel return with their much anticipated debut LP. The band delivered an awesome four song demo that turned into a 7-inch release courtesy of No Idea Records in 2007. The band features former members of Latterman, Each Other’s Mothers and Slingshot Dakota among many others. Bridge And Tunnel’s debut offering, East/West, marks a noticeable shift for the band and is the kind of album that rewards patience from the listener.

Much of the changes can probably be traced back to the band’s choice in recording. Granted the songs eschew any sort of accessibility or pop directness in the first place. The post-hardcore dynamics that the band flashed on their demo are certainly turned up to ten here. But the choice to opt for a more closed in sound with large doses of reverb kind of pushes the band’s sound inward. Not to mention that East/West was recorded by Kevin Ratterman (Elliott) after hours in an active funeral home and you have a recipe for a record that truly builds itself up from within.

What has not changed for Bridge And Tunnel is the smart lyrical nature and the inventive instrumentation of the band. This is the sound of punk rock being played by a group who knows how to play their instruments and not just recycle their influences. This is the sound of youth turning into adulthood. This is the sound of optimism being choked by apathy yet refusing to go down gracefully. Bridge And Tunnel could have taken a much easier route on their debut but the band chose to take the road less traveled. I may not always love East/West but I respect the hell out of it. On “White-Collar Crime Scene” the band asks, So where the fuck is our pride tonight? Are we just blank slates born at the end of an arms race? No doubt, Bridge And Tunnel are still here and they are still pissed. And for that we should be grateful.

My Heart To Joy At The Same Tone: Virgin Sails 7″

posted by Will

in Best New Music, Music Reviews, Vinyl Corner

[Best New Music]

Virgin Sails 7″ boasts three powerful and moving songs from Connecticut’s My Heart To Joy At The Same Tone. This is pretty awesome stuff that has left me quite impressed (and kicking myself that it’s basically been sitting on my floor for a few months.) I think a lazy comparison (and the band seems to think so too) would be to Hot Water Music. But really, My Heart To Joy At The Same Tone sound even thicker than HWM which might sound impossible but whatever. Perhaps a better comparison would be early Small Brown Bike which had a pretty dark atmosphere much like the first two songs here possess. My Heart To Joy, which they seem to be calling themselves now, are driving in their approach and pack these songs with subtle melodies, anger and emotion that simply boils over at the seams. The third track, “All Of Life Is Coming” has an almost Latterman-ish feel to it as it dips into quieter parts before exploding with a rapturous sing along ending. Familiar yet completely refreshing at the same time, My Heart To Joy At The Same Tone are on to something special here. The band just finished recording an LP for spring 2009. I’m pumped!

Can somebody say hell yes! Members of Latterman, Small Arms Dealer, Agent and Suicide Fix combine for one of the best demos I have heard in a long time. I am not familiar with Suicide Fix but fans of the first three bands should crap their pants on these five songs. Iron Chic have the driving melodicism of Latterman with the heart of Agent and the vocal snarl courtesy of Lubrano from Small Arms Dealer. Put those three elements together and you have got a flat out scorcher of a demo. Anthemic and moving, Iron Chic have truly outdone themselves. What else is there to say? Can we get a full-length boys?

I STRONGLY recommend that you download The State Lottery’s Cities We’re Not From record which I will have a review up for soon. And of course, you can buy the vinyl LP from Salinas. Seriously, this is one of my favorite records of the year.

Also at the link above, you can pick up two new super groups and their debut EPs: Thousandaires (members of Bridge & Tunnel, Get Bent, Halo Fauna) and Iron Chic (members of Latterman, Small Arms Dealer, Agent, Suicide Fix). God, how incestuous these boys are!

Red And Blue/Traffic & Weather: Split LP

posted by Will

in Music Reviews, Vinyl Corner

Ah, the many shades of pop/punk. This split between NY’s Red And Blue and MIchigan’s Traffic & Weather is a perfect example of the broad brush of this genre.

Red And Blue are up first. These six songs were recorded by the illustrious Phil Douglas of Latterman. Red And Blue are occupying the more geeky side of pop/punk. Lyrically, the boys are singing about the day to day monotony of life and the restlessness that comes along with that feeling. Red And Blue are sloppy, pop punk fun…nothing more, nothing less.

From the ashes of The Gibbons comes Traffic & Weather. The Gibbons were an absolutely fantastic punk band much in the mold of Jawbreaker and The Lawrence Arms. Traffic & Weather, while perhaps being a bit more dynamic than The Gibbons, are still occupying the same sonic territory. This is pissed off melodic pop-punk with razor sharp lyrics and vocals.

Like a tour through the unending reaches of pop/punk, this split showcases two bands playing a well worn style with power, affection and their own signature. Well done on both sides.
