In The Red: Volume 2

posted by Will

in Music Reviews

RIYL: Hot Water Music (duh), Nirvana (interesting), Leatherface (obviously), Stone Temple Pilots (uh-oh). Yup that was the reaction upon my first glance at the press sheet. Unfortunately listening to In The Red’s Volume 2 did nothing to quell my hesitance. First, let me say that I have loved everything Mike Hale has done. Gunmoll, Volume 1 by In The Red and his solo work are all top notch in my estimation. And don’t get me wrong, I can dig on some STP however that is not really what I’m looking for when I pop in a Mike Hale affiliated record. But Volume 2, aside from the amazing artwork just lacks that intangible quality that Hale is known for. The is bland radio (grunge) rock about as safe as your local Nickelback cover band. Ok, so maybe that is a bit harsh but this is more than just a puzzling turn from a band who released such an amazing record last year. I can certainly appreciate a change in direction for a band even if I I might not agree with the direction they choose. But Volume 2 lacks any aggression, passion or emotion which just about lines it up with anything you might hear on the radio. Just like your typical modern rock record, Volume 2 feels contrived from the very beginning. In setting out to make a “rock” record, In The Red lost what made the band so special in the first place. Here is hoping they can find it again on Volume 3 no matter what musical direction they choose to take. Oh, and “Green Eyes” sounds like a Christian Rock song…yup, maybe this album is THAT bad.

Monikers: Wake Up

posted by Will

in Music Reviews

Boy, they sure don’t make them like they once did. It takes a band like Monikers to come along and reminds you just how good we had it back in the day. The band echoes such phenomenal pop/punk fore bearers like Leatherface, Jawbreaker and Crimpshrine. Monikers are fronted by Ryan Seagrist, former member of one of my all time favorite bands, pop punk legends Discount. Wake Up is the band’s debut full-length and is unabashedly chock full of ’90s East Bay-styled pop punk. This is pop/punk the way it was meant to be…no sheen and no bullshit. The band also has a modern feel that is reminiscent of Lawrence Arms and Dillinger Four. But where their debut EP sounded more like a collection of their influences, Wake Up is a solid and often thrilling jumping off point for kids who may be discovering this sound for the first time. The acoustic album closer “Black” is a great song and draws the album to an appropriate ending. Monikers are gritty, catchy and completely honest and Wake Up is a refreshing listen to say the least.

Off With Their Heads: From The Bottom

posted by Will

in Music Reviews

Now, this is what I am talking about! Gruff pop-punk done correct! There are some records that I listen to and just thank god I’m still listening to punk rock. Off With Their HeadsFrom The Bottom is one of those records. Man, has hopelessness ever sounded this catchy before? These boys are seriously down about their lives. How can negativity sound this damn good though? I’ll tell you how, OWTH wrap their jaded lyrics in the most melodic pop/punk you can imagine. This is pop-punk for the seriously downtrodden and I’m loving every second of it. The production of this record is spot on. From The Bottom sounds huge but the band keeps their raw razor blade edge. Not surprisingly, Off With Their Heads hail from Minneapolis, MN and you can certainly hear the influence of that region especially Dillinger Four. From The Bottom might be saying the same thing as any number of records I have listened to over the last 15 years. But the desperation and heartache is palpable here. It is powerful and dare I say even uplifting in a strangely comforting way. So raise your fist and pull yourself up…From The Bottom!

Lock And Key: Self-Titled

posted by Will

in Music Reviews

The boys from Boston’s Lock And Key are back again but this time it is a bittersweet listen. Unfortunately, this self-titled affair is the band’s swan song. Lock And Key made the decision to call it quits last year but lucky for us that they deemed it necessary to document their final songs. Lock And Key play emotional post-hardcore in the vein of Hot Water Music, Small Brown Bike and Leatherface. Yeah, I know, we have all heard this sound played many times before. However, Lock And Key have always been a cut above the rest in regards to moving beyond their influences. The band’s material can often go toe to toe against those heavyweights. That certainly speaks volumes but it is the band’s sincerity and passion that carries the heavier stick. That continues here on their final release as Lock And Key let it all hang out. You can hear the emotion bleeding out from the speakers. The album is a unique listening experience as it seems as though many of these songs were written with the band’s demise already etched in stone. Much of the album touches on the trials and tribulations of a band simply trying to keep their head above water. Lock And Key are fighting to keep going and stay positive while battling negativity and frustration. It is a rare look into the true heart of a DIY band trying to carry on despite overwhelming odds. In the end, the band decided to hang it up and move on. Take nothing away from Lock And Key. They can walk away with their heads held high. On “Last Song” Lock And Key shout out exactly what I would expect. Never forget, never regret. Always in debt to all of you. Cheers Lock And Key, it was a fantastic ride!

Band You Should Know: Chillerton

posted by Will

in BYSK

Got a hold of the fantastic Bleak Unison LP (via Document Recordings) from UK’s Chillerton recently and this band definitely deserves to be heard. Fans of gruff pop punk, Leatherface and No Idea Records should eat this up. Chillerton are able to distinguish themselves by adding a bit more melody to their rough and tumble sound. Chillerton are on the higher scale when it comes to this genre and this is only the band’s debut. Bleak Unison is only the sound of Chillerton getting their feet wet. What lies ahead for the band is certainly exciting.

In The Red: Volume 1

posted by Will

in Best New Music, Music Reviews

In The Red is the new band from former Gunmoll frontman, Mike Hale. Gunmoll sounded like what you might expect if Leatherface and Jawbreaker had a premature baby. They released two albums and a split or two before going on hiatus indefinitely. Well, Mike Hale moved from Gainesville out to California after Gunmoll’s split and put out a solo album via Asian Man Records in 2007. It was certainly adequate but all Gunmoll fans have been waiting for him to plug back in with another rock band. And now he has done just that with In The Red. After a few split teases here and there, we finally have the band’s official full-length debut, simply titled Volume 1. If you dug what Gunmoll was about, In The Red will will have you foaming at the mouth.  In The Red uses Hale’s maturation to the band’s advantage. Showing off a more polished and defined sound, In The Red are sharper than Gunmoll ever was. No worries though, Hale’s vocals still remain as gruff and powerful as ever. Vocally, Hale certainly was a student who learned at the altar of Frankie Stubbs of Leatherface. His throaty screams continue to define his bands with great results. Much like Gunmoll could turn a song upside down on a dime, In The Red are practicing the same kind of anthemic explosions. Volume 1 is a massive success on just about every level. Fans of this style and genre should be running to get this. I am stoked to hear what Hale and his cohorts have in store next.

The Gaslight Anthem: Señor and the Queen 2×7″

posted by Will

in Best New Music, Music Reviews, Vinyl Corner

The Gaslight Anthem have skyrocketed from obscurity to being one of my favorite bands (and isn’t that what it’s all about?). Sink or Swim was one of my favorite albums of 2007 and my love for the band only increased after seeing them live twice last year. The band returns with a 2×7″ and four new songs right on the heels of the band signing to Side One Dummy. First off, the packaging is tremendous here. Was it necessary for just four songs? No, but a gatefold 2×7″ with red colored vinyl is just too damn cool.

The ascension of The Gaslight Anthem has astounded everybody (including the band) but it certainly is well-deserved. If Sink Or Swim didn’t convince you maybe four more great americana-laced punk rock tunes will sway you. Señor and the Queen picks up exactly where the band’s tremendous debut album left off. Only problem is that it’s too damn short. Four songs? I want so much more! If you have been around here for a while you might remember my ill-fated blog, Jeans And A White Tee (that still lives on, in my head at least). So, obviously, the closer here, entitled “Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts” is a definite favorite of mine. Wild hearts, blue jeans & white tee shirts! God, I love this band.
