Dear Landlord: Dream Homes

posted by Will

in Music Reviews

I know I’m a little late on this one but man, No Idea sure can find them. If you love Off With Their Heads then Dear Landlord should be right up your alley. And surprise Dear Landlord consists of members of The Copyrights, Off With Their Heads and The Gateway District! By the way, how many bands are these guys in? Not that I’m complaining though. I’ve listened to the band’s debut full-length, Dream Homes, off and on for much of 2009 but it just never clicked with me til recently. The album was even a late contender to sneak into my year end lists. I love these bands that meld melodic hardcore with a bit of the Lookout-era snotty pop/punk thing. Bands like Dear Landlord, Banner Pilot and Off With Their Heads give hope to these jaded ears.

Band You Should Know: Teenage Bottlerocket

This one has been sitting in the draft folder for a few weeks…I guess I waited too long cause everybody will know this band now that they have signed to Fat Wreck Chords. But I’m not one to let a post go to waste. Teenage Bottlerocket have been around for a few years now with barely a sniff from SAL. That is my bad indeed. In the last few months I have fallen hard for the band’s 2008 album, Warning Device. I was stunned at how much better the band sounded than what I remember from my initial listens a few years ago. Sometimes it just takes a few albums for a band to hit their stride. With their third album, Teenage Bottlerocket has improved leaps and bounds and Warning Device is the proof in the pudding. For fans of pop/punk, Screeching Weasel and Lookout Records but with a definite modern feel.

Banner Pilot: Resignation Day

posted by Will

in Music Reviews

Good pop/punk and Minneapolis seem to go hand in hand and Banner Pilot continue that trademark tradition with Resignation Day. While the band certainly owes some debts to the likes of Dillinger Four there is also a huge early Lawrence Arms/Broadways influence here as well. The gritty vocals certainly remind one of Brendan Kelly (Slapstick, The Broadways, The Lawrence Arms, The Falcon). But there is also a cool pop undercurrent to the band’s songs. I can hear shades of Screeching Weasel melodies and the old Lookout Record days throughout Resignation Day especially on album opener “Overwinter” and songs like “Speed Trap”. “Empty Your Bottles” and “Milemarker” are awesome tracks that practically beg you to sing along. For fans of snotty pop/punk Banner Pilot is a must hear and Resignation Day is a must have!

Julie Ocean: Long Gone And Nearly There

posted by Will

in Music Reviews

What’s the saying? The perfect pop song should never last more than three minutes. Something like that. Well, Washington, DC’s Julie Ocean abide by that golden rule on 8 out of 10 songs with their debut, Long Gone And Nearly There. The band is a super group of DC veterans with members doing time in bands like Velocity Girl, The High Back Chairs, The Saturday People and Swiz to name a few. This record, while granted a bit higher on the maturity chart, would have fit right in on the Lookout Records catalog back in the day. I can hear shades of Dr. Frank and The Mr. T Experience across the power pop of Long Gone And Nearly There and that certainly brings a smile to this aging face. I even dug up the MTX classic, Love Is Dead and gave it a good spin. But back to the band at hand. There is a bit of the mod pop undercurrent in Julie Ocean’s songs as well. Which I guess should not come as a surprise. The band takes their name from The Undertones and you can definitely hear some (The) Jam influences as well. While the album might go unnoticed upon your first listen or two just be patient. If this album was released 15 years ago it might be a classic by now. Ten songs at barely over 25 minutes, Long Gone and Nearly There is an absolute blast that will have you reaching for the replay button over and over again. And that is the simple brilliance of a well done pop song.

Speaker Speaker: Call It Off

I mentioned in my review of the Seattle’s Speaker Speaker’s EP here, that a full length was already recorded and waiting on release. Well, now we have the release of Call It Off. The album was produced by J. Robbins which might be a bit misleading at first. This is not Dischord/DC influenced indie rock in the slightest bit. Speaker Speaker actually echo the sounds of classic punk like Ted Leo, The Buzzcocks or even the power pop/punk of 90’s era Lookout Records. But, to be more exact, Speaker Speaker sound an awful lot like their Washington state brethren in the sadly defunct pop/punk band, Sicko. While Speaker Speaker are not as over the top humorous as Sicko, the two bands share a wealth of similarities. Call It Off is a fast paced affair as the band rarely takes their foot off the gas pedal. The band also reminds one of Portland’s Thermals in the way their attack their songs. But a lack of tempo shifts can spell doom for any album no matter how strong the songs may be. For the most part though, Speaker Speaker do an excellent job in keeping the listener’s attention. Songs are able to stand on their own and the band’s pop chops continue to shine through no matter the direction the band pushes towards. Still, even though this is the kind of stuff I usually fawn over, Speaker Speaker have not fully won me over yet. The trio certainly have the songs and the ability to put a big fat grin on your face but something still seems a bit lacking here. I hate to be so vague cause I have listened to Call It Off numerous times now and it is always an enjoyable affair. So, I guess I’ll just chalk it up to my own ignorance and go ahead and recommend Call It Off. Hell, you could do a lot worse. One side note, the album artwork by Jesse LeDoux is impressive.
