A Lull: Ice Cream Bones

A Lull is certainly a change in direction for the three members that make up the band. Nigel Dennis, Mike Brown and Todd Miller all hail from of other rock-centric bands (The Evaluation, The Skies We Built, Ateriavia) but on their debut EP, Ice Cream Bones, they are pulling from a completely different set of influences. It sounds as though the guys have been listening to lots of hip indie bands (Animal Collective) but there is something that works really well for me here. Perhaps it is the succinctness of it all…4 songs in 11 minutes breeds multiple listens. A Lull kind of reminds me of a band like Holopaw. Both have a rustic beauty but A Lull throw on many more layers over the vocals. Ice Cream Bones is a fine teaser for a band that is hard at work on their first LP scheduled for release in early 2010.

Pomegranates: Everybody, Come Outside!

in Music Reviews

Just when you thought there was no reason to buy a full CD, the Pomegranates release Everybody, Come Outside! This is the second full release for the Cincinnati-based band, and has them sounding more confident and consistently tuneful. If the Pomegranates are new to you, their sound is somewhere between the Afro pop beats of Vampire Weekend and the melodic experimentation of Los Campesinos, but more listenable than both. While not exactly a concept record, Everybody, Come Outside! tells the story of boy who sets out to swim across the ocean only to be abducted by a time traveler – each song revealing more of the story. Listening to the record for the first time you know, however, that the focus is not on the story but on delivering well-crafted songs. And with the exception of the tiresome last track, the record oozes ebullience beginning with glorious title track that had me jumping and bouncing like a pogo stick on a trampoline. “Corriander” stands out as one of the records strongest efforts with its undulating guitars and tightly packed rhythms, while “Svaatzi Uutsi” has a retro feel that conjures up the best of New Order before their dance hits. With Everybody, Come Outside!, the Pomegrantes have delivered an innovative indie gem that will surely be one of the year’s best.

I have always tried to keep up with the artwork of Nigel Evan Dennis and dug his old band, The Evaluation. But, I had no idea he was in a new band called A Lull. The band’s first release, Ice Cream Bones, comes out in May on Lujo. The video incorporates Dennis’ artwork. I am digging this song.

LOOK MEXICO – Debuts New Video for “You’re Not Afraid Of The Dark, Are You?”
——————————————————-

* from latest EP, GASP ASP – Out now on Tiny Engines / Lujo
* Unreleased Bionic Ear Session track available for free download

——————————————————-

LOOK MEXICO (Tallahassee, F.L.) has unveiled a new video for “You’re Not Afraid Of The Dark, Are You?” It’s the first song from the band’s latest EP, GASP ASP.

Remember the pie eating scene in Stand By Me? It’ s sort of like that, minus the vomiting.

Gasp Asp was recently released in 7-inch vinyl format by Tiny Engines while Lujo Records released a digital version in September of 2008.

In other news, Look Mexico stopped by Bionic Ear Recording Studio on their last U.S. tour to record something shiny and new for Indie Rock Review’s Bionic Ear Sessions. You can download a free mp3 for the previously unreleased “Just Like Old Times” here. There’s also a great video of the band recording the song in the studio.

Currently, Look Mexico is writing new songs for what will be the full-length follow-up to their critically acclaimed debut This Is Animal Music. The band will be playing a handful of shows in Florida over the next couple months, including the Harvest of Hope Fest in March.

Look Mexico – Pre-order New 7-inch

in Music News

Hey everybody, Tiny Engines is finally born! The record label that I have started with some friends (Chuck Daley from Beartrap PR and Jeff Meyer from Jena Berlin) is finally upon us. Check out the press release below and definitely check out the music. I think this is Look Mexico’s best stuff yet. And buy a 7″ so I can at least break even cause I am broke! Thanks!

LOOK MEXICOGASP ASP vinyl now available for pre-order!
——————————————————-

* Pre-order 7-inch now from new label Tiny Engines (cause we’ll be out of business in six months)
* Vinyl available in three colors – ships on November 25th
* Digital version from Lujo Records available now

——————————————————-

GASP ASP, the newest 7-inch from Tallahassee, Florida’s LOOK MEXICO, is available now for pre-order from fledgling, destined-to-fail label, Tiny Engines.

Go here to grab a copy of this tasty slab of plastic. Orders will ship on November 25th and will include an mp3 download code for the songs.

Undoubtedly Look Mexico’s best work to date, Gasp Asp builds on the foundation of their brief-but-impressive catalog – the dynamic instrumental interplay, undeniably catchy melodies and a knack for keeping things unpredictable. Still, these three tracks inject a welcomed sense of maturity and craftsmanship, and Look Mexico sound more assured of their songwriting abilities than ever before. The band has truly discovered its own unique voice in indie rock.

On the other hand, Tiny Engines hasn’t done a single noteworthy thing, save for this 7-inch…which isn’t even out yet. Having said that, we’re fairly confident that we put together a really sweet first release. There are 1000 copies of the vinyl being pressed in three colors: light blue (200), white (200) and green (600). We also printed jackets (art by the band’s Josh Mikel / layout by JLP) featuring matte-finish and two foil-stamping variations. Of course, it’s easy to put together an awesome package when you’re working around three amazing songs.

Speaking of mp3s, in September Lujo Records released a four-song digital EP version of Gasp Asp. If vinyl doesn’t get you all hot and bothered, the EP is available from iTunes now. And don’t forget to check out other Look Mexico albums from Lujo, including The Crucial Collection and their awesome debut full-length, This Is Animal Music

It’s also worthwhile to note that Suburban Home is taking pre-orders for a split 7-inch between Look Mexico and pals Fake Problems. The vinyl is the first volume in Suburban Home / Vinyl Collective’s Under The Influence Series.

Look Mexico: The Crucial Collection

posted by Mattison

in Music Reviews

First off, I will go ahead and state that I am not the right person to write a review on a Look Mexico album. Yes, I’ve heard the band before (and liked them, for that matter). But Will has tried to get me to go see these guys several times when they’ve been in town; the first attempt I showed up right as they were finishing the last song, and the past couple of times I’ve used some admittedly lame excuse for ditching out on four guys that could use some gas money more than I needed that A/B/Y pedal I just shelled out close to $50 for. Ironically, I’d rather be on tour than putting on a suit and going to work every morning, so I’m at least jealous of Look Mexico for being on the road so much.

But this isn’t the time nor webplace for me to be reminiscing on shows missed and friends let down. Look Mexico put out what I best can describe as a “compilation” of past work, or as Will informed me: “It’s a collection. All the songs from The Crucial EP, some songs from the So Byzantine EP, and B-sides and remixes.” Which doesn’t really help me out much, because as you’ve read, I’m not a fanboy or anything. Regardless, the music is good. Really good. And I appreciate that, especially as a musician. You don’t have to like golf to appreciate that Tiger Woods is a great golfer. And you don’t have to like indie rock to appreciate that Look Mexico is proficient at songwriting.

I’m not going to go into great detail on each of the 14 songs on the album. The average song length is easily over 3:30, and there are no less than a bazillion parts to each song, so I’d need the rest of SAL to cover it properly. It’s not shoegazer; it’s not jam band; it’s not just plain-ol-indie rock; it’s not anything that can be pegged into a genre. It’s just good. Hell, I don’t even know what to compare it to. But I will go on the SAL record that I’ll show up next time they’re in town. Promise. To end it:

“Look Mexico plays music that sounds great on a hot southern day right after it rained and you’re sitting on the front porch drinking a beer.” How’s that for a promo tag?

Pomegranates: Everything Is Alive

posted by Will

in Best New Music, Music Reviews

pomegranates2.jpg

Pomegranates debut, the Two Eyes EP, was one of my favorites of 2007. The band’s first full-length, Everything Is Alive, is a bit of a different beast though. On Two Eyes, Pomegranates attacked their songs with a youthful exuberance. However, on Everything Is Alive the band has grown up in a relatively short time. Here, Pomegranates lay back and let the material come to them instead. The songs are, dare I say, more mature and well-rounded. They offer more structure than the band’s original frenzied approach towards indie pop. The band’s enthusiasm might be missed at first but Everything Is Alive proves Pomegranates have way more to offer than just a good time.

Everything Is Alive was recorded and mixed in the span of six days. The majority of the album was tracked live and those elements add a great deal of character as well as a bit of spontaneity to the recording. Everything Is Alive is an album completely comfortable in its own skin. In essence, the album title is brilliant. Whatever flaws and callouses the band possesses, it is what makes them unique and it breathes life into Everything Is Alive.

With two vocalists who offer distinctly different paths, Pomegranates walk the line masterfully on Everything Is Alive. It is what the band surrounds those vocals with that is so exhilarating though. Pomegranates’ arrangements are cunning to say the least. There is inherent melody in the band’s song but there is also a subtle ambiance that intrigues throughout. Lyrically, the band shows off an impressive depth and maturity. The songs range from gentle caresses to anthemic sparks of energy but always possess a brilliant intimacy.

Over the last few years, indie pop has become stale and overrun with countless bands and inconsequential hype. Essentially, the genre has lost its soul. Pomegranates are able to reinvigorate a lifeless body with the earnest, hopeful spirit that emanates from Everything Is Alive. The record is a true, joyful expression of life and all the sadness and beauty therein. Who knew indie rock had such a wild, beating heart left on the inside?
