Just when you thought there was no reason to buy a full CD, the Pomegranates release Everybody, Come Outside! This is the second full release for the Cincinnati-based band, and has them sounding more confident and consistently tuneful. If the Pomegranates are new to you, their sound is somewhere between the Afro pop beats of Vampire Weekend and the melodic experimentation of Los Campesinos, but more listenable than both. While not exactly a concept record, Everybody, Come Outside! tells the story of boy who sets out to swim across the ocean only to be abducted by a time traveler – each song revealing more of the story. Listening to the record for the first time you know, however, that the focus is not on the story but on delivering well-crafted songs. And with the exception of the tiresome last track, the record oozes ebullience beginning with glorious title track that had me jumping and bouncing like a pogo stick on a trampoline. “Corriander” stands out as one of the records strongest efforts with its undulating guitars and tightly packed rhythms, while “Svaatzi Uutsi” has a retro feel that conjures up the best of New Order before their dance hits. With Everybody, Come Outside!, the Pomegrantes have delivered an innovative indie gem that will surely be one of the year’s best.
