Dear Landlord: Dream Homes

posted by Will

in Music Reviews

I know I’m a little late on this one but man, No Idea sure can find them. If you love Off With Their Heads then Dear Landlord should be right up your alley. And surprise Dear Landlord consists of members of The Copyrights, Off With Their Heads and The Gateway District! By the way, how many bands are these guys in? Not that I’m complaining though. I’ve listened to the band’s debut full-length, Dream Homes, off and on for much of 2009 but it just never clicked with me til recently. The album was even a late contender to sneak into my year end lists. I love these bands that meld melodic hardcore with a bit of the Lookout-era snotty pop/punk thing. Bands like Dear Landlord, Banner Pilot and Off With Their Heads give hope to these jaded ears.

The Gateway District: Some Days You Get The Thunder

On Some Days You Get The Thunder, The Gateway District provide some snotty (and I do mean snotty!) female-fronted pop/punk with a bit of Americana thrown in for good measure. This is yet another solid band from the inbred (and I mean that in the most positive way) Minneapolis scene. The Gateway District includes members from Off With Their Heads, Banner Pilot, Dear Landlord and The Soviettes just to name a few. This reminds me of the old Fat Wreck band Tilt at times but with a lot more Midwestern flavor to it. The Gateway District are also reminiscent of the ramshackle East Bay meets Minneapolis sound of the old D4 side band, Cleveland Bound Death Sentence as well. Good stuff.

Top 20 Albums of 2008 (11-20)

#20 - Brass “Set & Drift” (Self-Released)

- If Brass were around ten years ago they would have been on Desoto Records and J. Robbins would have produced this record.

#19 – Good Luck “Into Lake Griffy” (Self-Released)

- Into Lake Griffy is a damn pop/punk opera!

#18 – Slingshot Dakota “Their Dreams Are Dead, But Ours Is The Golden Ghost” (Self-Released)

- Uplifting and heartfelt tales of the road and life in general. This album gives me a warm fuzzy feeling!

#17 – Lynus “Nice Outside” (Royal Blue Collective)

- The second coming of No Knife!? Angular pop hooks galore!

#16 – Off With Their Heads “From The Bottom” (No Idea)

- Desperation and hope twisted together beautifully with raging, melodic pop punk.

#15 – City And Colour “Bring Me Your Love” (Vagrant)

- Singer/songwriter material from Dallas Green of Alexisonfire. Don’t let that scare you away though. This is gorgeous stuff.

#14 – In The Red “Volume I” (Kiss Of Death/Rat Patrol)

- Mike Hale from Gunmoll’s awesome new band! Hale and Leatherface’s Frankie Stubbs should have a contest to see who has the gruffest vocals.

#13 – Lemuria “Get Better” (Asian Man)

- Mature power pop rock with dual male/female vocals. A distinct but successful leap from the band’s earlier releases. It will be interesting to see where they go from here.

#12 – Able Baker Fox “Voices” (Second Nature)

- Able Baker Fox was a wet dream come true for old school Small Brown Bike and Casket Lottery fans like myself.

#11 – Tim Barry “Manchester” (Suburban Home)

- If I had more time with it no doubt Manchester would have made my top ten. Barry is about as real as it gets for a singer/songwriter.

Off With Their Heads: From The Bottom

posted by Will

in Music Reviews

Now, this is what I am talking about! Gruff pop-punk done correct! There are some records that I listen to and just thank god I’m still listening to punk rock. Off With Their HeadsFrom The Bottom is one of those records. Man, has hopelessness ever sounded this catchy before? These boys are seriously down about their lives. How can negativity sound this damn good though? I’ll tell you how, OWTH wrap their jaded lyrics in the most melodic pop/punk you can imagine. This is pop-punk for the seriously downtrodden and I’m loving every second of it. The production of this record is spot on. From The Bottom sounds huge but the band keeps their raw razor blade edge. Not surprisingly, Off With Their Heads hail from Minneapolis, MN and you can certainly hear the influence of that region especially Dillinger Four. From The Bottom might be saying the same thing as any number of records I have listened to over the last 15 years. But the desperation and heartache is palpable here. It is powerful and dare I say even uplifting in a strangely comforting way. So raise your fist and pull yourself up…From The Bottom!
