Eksi Ekso: I Am Your Bastard Wings

in Music Reviews

Upon initial observation, Eksi Ekso’s I Am Your Bastard Wings might seem like a peculiar release for Magic Bullet, a label more known for it’s instrumental behemoths and punk/hardcore bands. Upon closer inspection though, Eksi Ekso is actually made up of some former members of previous Magic Bullet alumni, The Burning Paris and On Fire. Eksi Ekso are an extremely mature rock band and some might even categorize the band into modern rock categories. But, that would be a gross understatement. Eksi Ekso are far too intelligent and ambitious to be confined that easily. From an instrumental standpoint, Eksi Ekso are certainly grandiose enough to match just about any post rock band. With a full string section for much of the record Eksi Ekso excels in creating illuminating soundscapes. Quite similar to a band like September Malevolence, Eksi Ekso have the might of a post-rock band with the subtle addition of vocals. The band’s musicianship and arrangements are stunning to say the least. I Am Your Bastard Wings is 50+ minutes of rising and falling, of pain and pleasure, of simplicity and elegance. While the album certainly illicits certain moods, Eksi Ekso’s I Am Your Bastard Wings is most certainly not just a mood piece that is meant to be left to the background. Turn the volume up on those headphones and realize the depths of what Eksi Ekso are creating here.

Marionette ID: Emptiness Will Change Your Mind

Certain bands break up and seemingly take their style of music with them when they go. I have always felt that was the case with Engine Down. The band’s brand of soothing, melodic post-hardcore was fairly original for such a crowded genre. When they folded, the band left a huge void as there seemed to be nobody else comparable in sound. Now, Hungarian band, Marionette ID has come along and made me realize just how much I love this style.

Marionette ID formed earlier this year and is touted as the ’successor’ of the Sammy Sosa Band that began in 2004. The eight songs that make up Emptiness Will Change Your Mind are a fascinating collection. Emptiness Will Change Your Mind is an album in the truest sense. These are eight pieces of a puzzle that make up a brilliant picture. There is a deliberate nature to the band’s songs as they slowly build layer upon layer and brick by brick. Subtle melodies are countered by moody instrumental passages and soothing vocals. Marionette ID possess an emotional weight and depth that truly set the band apart. This is post-hardcore at its most melodic and structured. Marionette ID are practicing a precision few bands dare to. If you are willing to give Emptiness Will Change Your Mind some time to grow, you will be richly rewarded.

Itch – UK band that has been around the block. I always forget about these guys but they have a new album on the horizon and the new songs sound great.

Mirror – Exciting, jazzy, instrumental stuff from Japan. On, Then, In is the band’s 2007 debut album and it’s an impressive slice of mathy rock.

September Malevolence – The new songs this Swedish band have posted for their upcoming record are tremendous. Post-rock with vocals? Yes indeedy.

White York – New York band that play gruff pop punk rock. Just got the band’s new seven-inch in the mail!

The Read – Cincinnati band that owes more than a few licks to bands like Gang Of Four and Q And Not U. The band’s demo is rough but promising.
