Heads Up! Tiny Engines To Release Everyone Everywhere LP

posted by Will

in Heads Up

If you didn’t know Tiny Engines is a label I started with two other guys in 2008. This will be our third release overall. 2010 will be much busier for us than our first two years. We’ve got 2 or 3 more releases coming this year!

TINY ENGINES To Release EVERYONE EVERYWHERE LP
——————————————————-

* Pre-order Self-Titled 12″ (out 05/04/10)
* Band now streaming two brand new songs
* Download 2009 debut 7″ for FREE @ If You Make It

——————————————————-

Tiny Engines is pleased to announce that it will release the Self-Titled debut full-length from Philadelphia’s Everyone Everywhere.

The album, which will be released in vinyl and digital formats on May 04, 2010, is now up for pre-order from the label. Tiny Engines will press 500 12-inches on maroon and off-white colorways (350 / 150). To secure a copy of this amazing record, go here.

The band is currently streaming two brand new songs, “Tiny Boat” and “Blown Up Grown Up,” on its Myspace page.

Everyone Everywhere’s eponymous debut builds on the rock-solid foundation laid down on last year’s dynamic 7″, A Lot Of Weird People Standing Around, and further pushes the band’s sonic palette in exciting new directions at every turn. Sure, those lovely Promise Ring vibes remain – not to mention hints of Braid’s twisting-yet-tuneful angularity, the crackling anti-anthems of indie heroes Superchunk and Piebald’s off-kilter sense of melody – but the Philly four piece has honed its songwriting chops, dialed in its amps and seriously upped the ante with this emotionally taut ten-song affair.

On a related note, Everyone Everywhere and Evil Weevil Records, the label responsible for the 7″ version of A Lot Of Weird People Standing Around, have teamed up with the awesome folks at If You Make It to give away a digital copy of the 4-song effort. Best Of 2009: Volume Four

in Year End Lists

Here’s my final Top Ten of 2009. Click on the album cover for any more coverage.

#1 Tigers Jaw “Spirit Desire” 7″ (Tiny Engines)

The second release from Tiny Engines, a label I co-run with two other guys. Shameless self-promotion? Sure, but I can honestly say I listened to this release more than any other in 2009. Indie rock and pop punk mixed ever so perfectly!

#2 Brian Bond “Fire & Gold” (Self-Released)

It takes an awful lot for me to get excited about a singer/songwriter but Brian Bond did just that. The fact that he resides in relative obscurity is a shame. And he’s got another album in the can for 2010 that is just as good as Fire & Gold.

#3 Golden City “Self-Titled” (Magic Bullet)

Eric Richter of Christie Front Drive returns with a brilliant set of songs. Imagine CFD crossed with JEW.

#4 Everyone Everywhere “A Lot Of Weird People Standing Around” 7″ (Evil Weevil)

The second coming of The Promise Ring…at least at times it sure sounds like it. The new songs these guys have recorded sound incredible.

#5 Superchunk “Leaves In The Gutter” EP & “Crossed Wires” 7″ (Merge)

Other than Sunny Day Real Estate, there was no greater welcome back party for me than to have Superchunk return with a new set of songs. On their first two releases in years the band puts forth some of their most energetic material since their early days.

#6 Annabel “Each And Everyone” (Count Your Lucky Stars)

Following up on their brilliant EP in 2008 Annabel nail their first full-length. Understated indie rock with just the right amount of pop and power.

#7 Touch Committee “Winter Beard” (Self-Released)

I love when bands come from completely out of nowhere to floor me. Touch Committee did just that with Winter Beard.

#8 Oceans “Nothing Collapses” (Copper Lung)

Sadly, Oceans called it quits shortly after this release. Nothing Collapses is one of the best post rock records I have heard in years. So, can we put the nail in the post rock coffin now?

#9 My Heart To Joy “Seasons In Verse”(Topshelf)

Intelligent and pushing themselves beyond any genre constriction, My Heart To Joy are like a raging hardcore version of Trail of Dead.

#10 Broadway Calls “Good Views, Bad News” (Side One Dummy)

Broadway Calls are the best current pop/punk band period. Bar none.

Who? Schematics

What do they sound like? I covered Schematics briefly here and the band has finally recorded a couple of songs. Like I said before, the band is for fans of mid to late 90’s indie/emo but with a healthy dose of pop/punk influence thrown in. I find it hard to put comparisons on these guys but I have heard bands like Samiam, The Promise Ring, Iron Chic and Small Brown Bike bantered about (thanks Andy and Eric!). Rumor is more recordings are on there way.

SAL’s Best Albums of 1999

posted by Will

in Year End Lists

Last year Jayme had a great idea of making a list of our favorite records of ten years ago…way back to 1998 to be exact. Eric at Can You See The Sunset and I of course followed right along. Well, we are back again and hopefully making this a yearly feature for all of us. This time we explore our favorites of 1999. So, here we go again! This list ended up being 30 albums cause I could not stop thinking of great albums to recognize…1999 was a great year. I did not list any descriptions so if you want more info on a band or an album just ask in the comments and I will be happy to wax nostalgic on some of the lesser knowns.

Who? Palmkite

What do they sound like? Emo. Yeah, it’s all the usual suspects…The Promise Ring, Cap’n Jazz, Joan of Arc. But there’s something else here that I can’t quite put my finger on. Either way it’s good. I love the way these songs just kind of lay back and unfold. There’s no taking the shortcut to a cheap hook. Formed earlier this year, Palmkite recorded a five song demo barely a month after they started. It’s pretty damn impressive considering that fact. Watch out for these dudes.

What do they sound like? The Promise Ring anyone? Animal Names play quirky and poppy indie/emo rock that manages to stay the right side of cheesy at all times. Comparisons to early Weezer and Get Up Kids would do just nicely as well. Animal Names’ debut, Oh Yes You Better Do is a bit unspectacular but definitely solid and shows a ton of potential. Watch out for this band to really turn on the jets on their next release.

What do they sound like? My buddy Chuck is working with Everyone Everywhere for Beartrap PR and I could not be more jealous. I went ahead and ordered the band’s first two releases and have been falling in love ever since. If bands like The Promise Ring and Piebald still make you swoon, Everyone Everywhere will sound like a familiar, yet fresh rush of excitement. With their latest release, the A Lot of Weird People Standing Around 7″…only 100 copies of blue and 100 copies of clear were printed up so you better hurry up and get on it!

Who? For Hours And Ours

Where are they from? Austin, TX

What do they sound like? One thing is apparent when listening to the first songs of For Hours And Ours. The band is still hard at work trying to discover their own unique sound. For Hours And Ours sometimes recalls the youthful naivety of Cap’n Jazz or the pop smarts of The Promise Ring and Death Cab For Cutie. The band even throws in some instrumental rock flourishes at times as well. Expansive, yet still entirely playful, For Hours And Ours make you wonder where the band will go from here.

You can download a bunch of the For Hours And Ours’ songs on their Last.Fm page.

Quick Hit: The Oregon Donor

posted by Will

in Quick Hits

I don’t like it when press releases are misleading. Comparing The Oregon Donor to The Promise Ring and Dismemberment Plan is just a flat out tease. Somethings isn’t bad, just terribly unconvincing. I can see a comparison to a band like The Velvet Teen being completely valid. But The Oregon Donor has a long way to go to get where that band is. The band’s proggier tendencies remind me of Muse and that is not a good thing on my end. Somethings was released on Burning Building Recordings.

Who? For Serious This Time

Where are they from? Northport, NY

What do they sound like? As I admitted to the band in a recent email, I was kicking myself for not noticing this EP sooner. I have probably had this for a good four months before it finally peaked my interest on a recent listen. Not sure what I was doing upon my first few listens but I guess that’s the beauty of music. You simply never know when something will hit you. For Serious This Time play an infectious brand of poppy emo/indie rock. A little twinkly at times but not overly mathy at all. There is a playful sloppyness that might offput some but I find it incredibly endearing. It’s hard to compare the band as I do feel they have their own thing going but I keep coming back to The Promise Ring for whatever reason. Either way, This Room is For Serious This Time’s first release as an electric band and it is a excellent start for the band.

THE COLOR WHEELS – Fall Shows
——————————————————-
* Week-long tour of Northeast begins today (Nov 07 – 15)
* In support of Self-Titled debut (Viper Bite Records)
——————————————————-

The pride of Poughkeepsie, THE COLOR WHEELS, will be hitting the road today for a short tour across the Northeast in support of their Self-Titled debut full-length on Viper Bite Records.

Made up of husband and wife duo of Jon and Psalm Sebastian, the band has put together a batch of cunningly addictive songs about pirate ships, playing house and pitching tents. Don’t be fooled though – therein lies the undeniable heart and contagious innocence of The Color Wheels. Still, behind the infectious guitars and sparkling melodies there are bursts of perfectly crafted power pop with a surprising attention to detail. If you rocked out to The Promise Ring’s Very Emergency back in the day, The Color Wheels Self-Titled debut is a must have.
