Balance and Composure: Only Boundaries

First a word of advice to these young fellas – please learn about half-rhyme! One of the few drawbacks to this nice and neat four-song EP is all the direct rhyme. While the convincing vocal performances go a long way towards distracting us from a mess of words that basically share all the same letters save for one each time around, remember that U2 barely gets away with rhyming fire and desire, so I’m just saying. Other than this complaint, though, there is a lot to like here. Balance and Composure reminds me of a less ambient Circa Survive. The songs seem to be meticulously constructed, which is good, because there isn’t a ton of musical talent, just some appealing ideas and solid execution. I also hear a lot of Thursday’s softer moments and some of Sunny Day Real Estate’s grandeur.

The band – for being so young – have a good sense of how to build songs in this spacey-emo genre where atmospherics and conviction are everything. The EP itself also seems to build well, starting with the simplest song and ending with the epic and uplifting “What’s Wrong with Everything.” A very nice record and worth your money if you like the older emo sound without all the catchy choruses depicting ways to cut out your heart. Balance and Composure exude a maturity here (though not necessarily in the lyrics) that bands twice their age still don’t have and it’s encouraging. A little work on the lyrics and some more ambitious musical passages and these kids will find themselves awash in fans.

Band Spotlight: Pianos Become The Teeth

Who? Pianos Become The Teeth

Where are they from? Baltimore, MD

What do they sound like? Pianos Become The Teeth have a sound that takes me back in time while still sounding relative to today’s musical landscape. The band mostly resembles early Thursday to me but you could also throw in bands like City of Caterpillar rather easily. No doubt this is modern day screamo with full on keyboards but there is a lot more experimentation going on inside. Just check out the band’s nine-minute song, “Creatures Of Habit” for proof of that. PBTT are certainly pushing the boundaries of the usual screamo definitions yet the band is able to breathe authenticity and sincerity into their work. Pianos Become The Teeth have new songs up and a new album called Old Pride on the horizon.

Static Radio (NJ): An Evening of Bad Decisions

in Best New Music, Music Reviews

What is it about punk kids from New Jersey? Something about the overpopulation, traffic, bad attitudes, smog, turnpikes, and accents turns out some fantastic music. Lifetime, Bouncing Souls, Saves The Day’s first couple of albums, Gaslight Anthem, Thursday’s first album, and… yeah I guess even the Misfits at times. Static Radio NJ seem to have let things get to them, blended and bottled it, and crammed it into roughly 27 minutes worth of music. These guys are angry, passionate, and ready to get to the point.

Just about every review of these guys has at some point compared them to Kid Dynamite, and it’s not far off. Breakneck speeds on both drums and guitars with a little bit angrier vocal styling and you are there. While I felt KD kept within the same musical boundaries, Static Radio attempt to set themselves apart with a more varied songwriting approach: hardcore breakdown (“Bothered”), anthemic singalong (“Fin”), moderate rocker (“Green Hoodie”), and off-timed thrash (“Standing Still”).

While the comparisons will likely continue to remain on this release, Static Radio are a fresh breath in a music world currently filled with drivel passed off as “punk” music. A definite immediate contender for “year end” lists, P.A. rotation between bands at shows, and the soundtrack to your next afternoon spent in line at the DMV.
