Best Of 2009: Volume Four

posted by Will

in Year End Lists

Here’s my final Top Ten of 2009. Click on the album cover for any more coverage.

#1 Tigers Jaw “Spirit Desire” 7″ (Tiny Engines)

The second release from Tiny Engines, a label I co-run with two other guys. Shameless self-promotion? Sure, but I can honestly say I listened to this release more than any other in 2009. Indie rock and pop punk mixed ever so perfectly!

#2 Brian Bond “Fire & Gold” (Self-Released)

It takes an awful lot for me to get excited about a singer/songwriter but Brian Bond did just that. The fact that he resides in relative obscurity is a shame. And he’s got another album in the can for 2010 that is just as good as Fire & Gold.

#3 Golden City “Self-Titled” (Magic Bullet)

Eric Richter of Christie Front Drive returns with a brilliant set of songs. Imagine CFD crossed with JEW.

#4 Everyone Everywhere “A Lot Of Weird People Standing Around” 7″ (Evil Weevil)

The second coming of The Promise Ring…at least at times it sure sounds like it. The new songs these guys have recorded sound incredible.

#5 Superchunk “Leaves In The Gutter” EP & “Crossed Wires” 7″ (Merge)

Other than Sunny Day Real Estate, there was no greater welcome back party for me than to have Superchunk return with a new set of songs. On their first two releases in years the band puts forth some of their most energetic material since their early days.

#6 Annabel “Each And Everyone” (Count Your Lucky Stars)

Following up on their brilliant EP in 2008 Annabel nail their first full-length. Understated indie rock with just the right amount of pop and power.

#7 Touch Committee “Winter Beard” (Self-Released)

I love when bands come from completely out of nowhere to floor me. Touch Committee did just that with Winter Beard.

#8 Oceans “Nothing Collapses” (Copper Lung)

Sadly, Oceans called it quits shortly after this release. Nothing Collapses is one of the best post rock records I have heard in years. So, can we put the nail in the post rock coffin now?

#9 My Heart To Joy “Seasons In Verse”(Topshelf)

Intelligent and pushing themselves beyond any genre constriction, My Heart To Joy are like a raging hardcore version of Trail of Dead.

#10 Broadway Calls “Good Views, Bad News” (Side One Dummy)

Broadway Calls are the best current pop/punk band period. Bar none.

Chuck (from Beartrap PR): 2009 Top Ten

posted by Will

in Year End Lists

Chuck Daley of Beartrap PR and Tiny Engines…two fine entities that I can vouch for and you should definitely check out!? Chuck once referred to me as his partner when introducing me. I did not like that.

* Friends Of Friends – Deep Search
Probably my favorite of 2009. Kind of sounds like something from the gruff / melodic No Idea stable of bands, but with lots of other subtle influences thrown in the mix as well. At times its choruses remind me of Avail’s sky-high punk anthems and other times there’s almost a 90s Chapel Hill / Archers of Loaf indie rock vibe. There are terrific lyrics and hooks galore, but it still shreds pretty hard and falls just left of being “catchy,” although it’s not a stretch to call these ten tracks unforgettable. Definitely check this one out.

Download it for free here!

* The G – Hold My Gold
Dirty, fuzzed-out indie rock with ragged punk heart, a knack for melody and a penchant for noisy experimentation.

* Juvenescent Beat! – One Day We’re Gonna Fall Through This Roof
Every year there are a bunch of bands who try to bring back that “true” mid-90s emo sound. This is definitely the best of all of them. This record is passionate, raging and jubilant all at the same time. A great record for anyone who remembers what the “E” word really means.

* P.O.S – Never Better
Hands down the best hip hop record I’ve heard in the past five years. Not that I listen to a lot of hip hop, but this just comes across as so fresh and unique. P.O.S. has a great, earnest delivery and Never Better is overflowing with intelligent, thought-provoking lyrics and really captivating beats. I dunno … maybe I like it because he comes from a punk background and throws out Fugazi references.

* Double Dagger – More
One vocalist, one drummer and one bassist? C’mon …. how arty and pretentious are you? Not very, actually. More is a really fun, upbeat, rhythm-heavy record that will blast a groove about a mile deep through your living room.

* Tigers Jaw – Spirit Desire 7″
I helped release this, so I’ll admit that I’m slightly biased. Still, Tigers Jaw is just one of those bands that seem to write music that appeals to fans of all types of musical genres. The title track is their darkest, most mature offering yet, but maybe their catchiest as well.

* Broadway Calls – Good Views, Bad News
I wasn’t sure if I liked this more than the band’s Self-Titled debut, but in the end I thought that Good Views, Bad News was the stronger overall record. This is pop punk done right – with a little bit of anger and edge and a truckload of unforgettable hooks. Seriously, I dare you to find one single part of this album that isn’t ridiculously catchy.

* What Price, Wonderland? – It Is True, It Is Shakey
The second best emo record of the year … although I’m a little hesitant to even call it that. Emo is certainly the base level here, but it tends to veer all over the place in a sloppy, herky-jerky and reckless way that totally works.

* Teenage Cool Kids – Foreign Lands
Seems like I’m diggin’ a lot of music this year that one could classify as a “throwback” to yesteryear. Summery, fuzzy, punk-tinged indie rock drenched in nostalgia, good vibes and plenty of sweet “whoo hoos.”

* Shook Ones – The Unquotable A.M.H
Okay, so this sounds exactly like Kid Dynamite, but who cares? Kid Dynamite was awesome.

Tiny Engines + Tigers Jaw = 7 inches of Awesome

posted by Will

in Music News

It recently occurred to me that amidst all the excitement surrounding Tiny Engines‘ decision to partner with the amazing Tigers Jaw – between the hustle, bustle and shenanigans involved in releasing records – we completely forgot to make any sort of formal declaration regarding the label’s latest vinyl endeavor. In fact, it totally just dawned on me that aside from a handful of people I’ve casually mentioned it to, no one even knows about our newest, sweetest little slab of 7-inch awesomeness, Spirit Desire.

On that note, Tiny Engines is officially confirming that it will release Spirit Desire, the latest 7-inch from Scranton, PA’s Tigers Jaw.

Furthermore, Tiny Engines would like to make a second, equally momentous announcement: Spirit Desire is now available for pre-order. To procure your copy, go here.

There – I’m sure the Blogosphere is blowing the hell up right about now. Read more

Spring Breaking

in Random Thoughts

Alright everyone, I am taking this week off to enjoy the weather and concentrate on getting ready for some upcoming Beartrap projects. This is something that will probably happen a bit more frequently in ‘09. Ah, such is life, I apologize.

Also, I think I announced this on Twitter recently but not sure if everyone (or anyone) saw it. SAL will start to have genre-specific weeks more often in the future. And if you have been paying attention during the last two weeks you will notice the site has already gone in that direction. Upcoming, I have a singer/songwriter week planned out and pop/punk should be close behind. Granted, this will not happen every week but should be fun regardless. See you in a week.

Oh, here’s what I’ve been listening to lately…

Annabel
The Appleseed Cast
Brian Bond
PJ Bond
Neko Case
Cheap Girls (still!)
Joie De Vivre
Morrissey
My Heart To Joy
Oceans
The Reptilian

Tigers Jaw: Self-Titled

in Best New Music, Music Reviews

[Best New Music]

Late last year Scranton, PA’s Tigers Jaw dropped an amazing album that easily made my 2008 year end list. The band plays a unique but catchy brand of pop punk with a definite indie rock sensibility. Upon my first few listens I struggled to find some valid comparisons for the band. Tigers Jaw have that endearing familiar charm while retaining a uniqueness all their own. After many listens some bands that finally came to mind were Superchunk, The Jazz June and Meneguar. Add to that the slacker-ish vocal style of Rivers Cuomo of Weezer or Alex Kerns from Lemuria and you have a recipe for an extremely addicting album. Similar in the way Meneguar is able to pull fans from genres that span many spectrums, Tigers Jaw possess that same ability as well. The melodies and harmonies are top notch here. The music is driving and powerful with washes of keyboard mixed in to accent everything just perfectly. This is an incredible debut that stands strongly on its own merits. But with closer inspection, this album really should speak towards the band’s promising future more than anything else.

Full Disclosure: This band’s press is handled by Beartrap PR. I work with Beartrap PR but I do not represent this band. These are my honest opinions. No shit, I swear!

Genre: Indie Rock/Pop Punk

RIYL: The Jazz June, Meneguar, Superchunk

Label: Prison Jazz

Top 20 Albums of 2008 (1-10)

posted by Will

in Year End Lists

I have gone back and forth about my #1. It really should be a 1a. and a 1b. scenario. Just saying.

OK, the year in review is done. I’m out. I will see you guys and gals next year. Yolo!

#10 – The Daylight Hours “How To Make A Mess Of Things” (Self-Released)

- For as much as I ended up listening to this album I thought it deserved to be in my top ten. Local singer/songwriter David Adedokun writes beautiful tales.

#9 – The Gaslight Anthem “The ‘59 Sound” (Side One Dummy)

- While not as instantly gratifying or commanding as their debut, The ‘59 Sound expands The Gaslight Anthem’s sound leaps and bounds. These guys could end up being really big before it’s over.

#8 – Dillinger Four “C I V I L W A R” (Fat Wreck Chords)

- Maturity is a bitch. Instead of Dillinger Four returning to their roots on their first album in six years, D4 made their most polished record yet. Career suicide? Perhaps if the songs weren’t so fucking good!

#7 – Pomegranates “Everything Is Alive” (Lujo)

- I had begun to hate anything labeled as “indie pop” but Pomegranates reaffirm my belief in the genre. Everything Is Alive is the sound of a band discovering who they are and therein lies its brilliance.

#6 – Algernon Cadwallader “Some Kind Of Cadwallader” (Be Happy)

- The little band that could keeps on going with a killer debut that delivered on the promises of the band’s demo.

#5 – Antlers “Self-Titled” (Rorschach)

- Amazing debut from this Richmond band. Mathy, eclectic, melodic and intricate…Antlers got it all.

#4 – Tigers Jaw “Self-Titled” (Prison Jazz)

- Insanely catchy pop/punk with addictive vocals. Try playing this album only once. I dare you.

#3 – The State Lottery “Cities We’re Not From” (Salinas)

- The music is powerful but it is The State Lottery’s lyrics that will slice you wide open.

#2 – Cheap Girls “Find Me A Drink Home” (Bermuda Mohawk)

- By far my most played album of 2008. Poetically frustrated lyrics set to power pop…fans of Lemonheads and Smoking Popes should fall in love just as I did many times over. Definitely honored to have worked with the band for Beartrap. Watch out for these guys. Bigger and brighter things are on the horizon!

#1 – Sun Kil Moon “April” (Caldo Verde)

- Perhaps the best album of Mark Kozelek’s career and that is an incredible statement. If April doesn’t deserve top spot, I’m not sure what does.

Heads Up!! Tigers Jaw

posted by Will

in Heads Up, Music Musings

My Beartrap PR partner/head man, Chuck, is working with a band called Tigers Jaw (they don’t like apostrophes apparently). And man, I am totally jealous that I did not find this band first. Tigers Jaw is amazing…summer time jams in the highest regard! But, I can not for the life of me think of many reference points. Any Ideas? Please help!?

Either way though, this is a fantastic album! Check out two tracks below. You can pre-order it here.
