Heads Up! Young Hearts

posted by Will

in Music

I was just thinking about Young Hearts last week and wondering what the band was up to. I absolutely loved the band’s last EP, The Fight. So, it was quite weird to hear just a few days later that the band had issued a new EP that was up for free download. My mind is obviously a very a powerful tool. So, yeah, you can download the band’s new 7-song EP Nowhere Kids for free right here!

Please repost the link and share it with anyone who will listen! The band is about to head out on tour in June and any donations made will go towards helping the band cover the costs of the upcoming tour.

Top 20 EPs of 2008 (11-20)

in Year End Lists

What a fantastic year for EPs, demos and seven-inchers! Click on album artwork for more.

#20 – Architect Sketch “Communication In Cases For Which No Other Form Is Applicable” (Self-Released)

- Muscular and mathy indie rock that is melodic and abrasive at the same time.

#19 – Tin Kitchen “Demo” (Self-Released)

- Sadly, the only three songs by this short lived band. Rainer Maria anyone?

#18 – Paper The Operator “Solemn Boyz” (Viper Bite)

- Power pop rock to the max. Fans of Jimmy Eat World should take notice.

#17 – Title Fight “Kingston” 7″ (Flight Plan)

- A dynamic first three songs from this young band channeling the ghosts of Lifetime and early Saves The Day.

#16 – Empire Empire (I Was A Lonely Estate) “Year Of The Rabbit” 7″ (Count Your Lucky Stars/Strictly No Capital Letters)

- The Emo revival is upon us. Empire Empire’s upcoming debut LP is slated for spring 09. Mineral, watch your ass!

#15 – Scream Hello “Smart & Stupid” (Red Leader)

- This EP perfectly showcases the range of Scream Hello. Perhaps better than the band’s LP which followed months later.

#14 – Get Bent “Demo” (Self-Released)

- Gruff and rustic pop/punk that promises a ton for the band’s future.

#13 – Young Hearts “Demo” (Self-Released)

- Former Dear Tonight members jump into pop punk waters and hit soaring heights!

#12 – Each Other’s Mothers “Demo” (Parrot On A Porch)

- Instrumental goodness. These gals can flat out play. Unfortunately, the band seems to have called it a day.

#11 – Know Think “Demo” (Self-Released)

- Emo loveliness akin to Look Mexico and Aloha.

Young Hearts: The Fight EP

posted by Will

in Best New Music, Music Reviews

If there was one silver lining in the break-up of Dear Tonight earlier this year, it was that Young Hearts has finally been able to step out of the shadows. Young Hearts, which had been relegated as a side project for the most part, has moved to the forefront for the members who shared their time between the two bands. Don’t let that connection fool you too much though. Sonically, Dear Tonight and Young Hearts are occupying different ends of the spectrum. Dear Tonight blasted you with lyrically relevant post-hardcore while Young Hearts blaze the pop/punk path with reckless abandon. But one thing the two bands do share is their undying passion and sincerity. You can feel it brimming from Young Hearts’ The Fight EP much in the same way it bled out from Dear Tonight’s songs. Young Hearts share a lot of similarities with Broadway Calls as well. You can tell the bands were both reared on hardcore but are now making their marks in the pop/punk ranks. The hardcore sensibility of the Young Heart’s earlier tastes/endeavors shines right through. Young Hearts certainly live up to their moniker here. The raw energy these four songs are able to convey makes The Fight EP a definite winner and one that promises a great deal for the future of the band as well as pop/punk in general.

You can download the EP here.

Various Artists: The Emo Diaries Chapter Eleven

posted by Will

in Music Reviews

I can not believe that I am sitting here in the year 2008 and reviewing yet another chapter of the Emo Diaries. More than a few years ago Deep Elm thankfully ended their run of Emo Diaries at the nice round, perfect number of ten. Makes sense, right? The world rejoiced, some emo kids cried and we all moved on to bigger and better things. Yet, for some reason, Deep Elm has elected to bring back to life this compilation that just deserves to be left alone at this point.

Above Them – OK, this ain’t half bad. At times it reminds me of Waxwing. That is a good thing. But, the song is all over the place. Definitely promising though.

This Drama – Not too shabby…dance flavored indie rock with some screamy elements that I wish the band would embrace more.

While You Were Gone – Power pop/rock with female vocals. Oh, is this emo now?

Knockout Kings – Is Taking Back Sunday still around? Victory Records, do you have a spot left for these guys?

Andy Tanner & His Grand Piano – I dig Andy’s vocal style and this could be good if not for some questionable lyrics. “It’s nights like these that I wish I had a girl.” C’mon now!

The Crash Engine – The name just gives it away. I knew what this was gonna sound like before I even heard it. Generic.

The Decoration – Oh, I actually like this. Kinda reminds me of a band like Nada Surf. Well done.

I’m Fashion, You’re Victim – Besides being one of the worst band names ever, I’m Fashion, You’re Victim play metal “fashion” core. Oh yeah!

Young Hearts – Ah, these guys are too good to be on this comp. Rad pop/punk…can I get some more please?

The City Beautiful – Better than most of the stuff on here. Unique sounding and hell, they’re from Antarctica, so that’s pretty cool.

My Awesome Compilation – Easily taking second place in worst band names on Emo Diaries Chapter Eleven. Did they write this song for a boxing movie or something? I feel so motivated now. Think I’ll pass.

Panel – Rocking but entirely too long and on the verge of irritating.

OK, so, overall that was a disappointing listen. Probably not as bad as I was expecting but four or five memorable songs out of twelve is a poor average for any compilation. And for someone who actually owns all ten of the Emo Diaries (don’t laugh, I got them for free), I can honestly say this is the least memorable. So, please, do us a favor Deep Elm, stop beating a dead horse. You’re just making it (much, much) worse.
